Hello all. I need some help. I had my MBR hosed by a power cut. I ran recovery disks and am now back in business but Windows has reverted to manufacturers defaults which are a couple of years old. I have downloaded the current Windows updates. However when I read my system with Everest it tells me that I have neither SP1 or SP@ installed. I seem to recall reading that the current updates, cover the contents of SP2. Is this so and if not where can I get a download of SP2

Try this

Goto Start > Run, type in winver and click OK

That will tell you if you have installed SP2.

What happens when you goto Windows Update? Do you get any critical or high priority updates listed as available?

I had 23 critical updates offered and I downloaded all of them. will follow your suggestions. Stewart

Winver says I have windows 5.1 but doesn't say anything about service packs.

Hmmm, it looks like you don't have SP2 then.

The newest updates will eventually form part of SP3, (if and when they are bundled together), so maybe you have been able to download updates beyond SP2 without having SP2 installed.

Try this;

In Windows Explorer, under the Windows folder do you have a first folder showing called $hf_mig$? And within that, do you have sub-floders with SP2 in the name?

Also, do you have a folder within Windows called $NtServicePackUninstall$? ((blue type face).

You may have to set Windows Explorer to show hidden files and folders, and also "Show encrypted or compressed NTFS files in color".

If you have neither, I would suggest you need to download and install SP2 again.

i didn't know you could "winver" like that....

so i did...

5.1 build xxxx xpsp2 2.xxxxxx.xxxx Service Pack1

does XP+SP2 state xpsp2 -.-.-.-.-.-Service Pack2?

My own winver gives me this;

Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158 : Service Pack 2)

I'm not sure m8, but I don't think you have SP2. I know that pre-SP2 some of the Windows Updates gave SP2, and I believe these were all included into the SP2 package.

Have you downloaded and installed the SP2 update?

I've ben off the computer for a time but to update........ After much huffing and puffing SP2 eventually downloaded for me so I am kosher again.Apart from Windows not liking some of my audio drivers I seem to be in good shape. Thanks for your help. Best regards Stewart

I hope you get your audio drivers sorted.

BTW, you may want to consider slipstreaming SP2 and your Windows XP Installation disks into a separate CD, so that if you have to do a full re-install again, you don't have to re-download SP2.
