General discussion

SP1 for individual users is out

I downloaded the full DVD ISO (over 1gb) as the MS update process failed. EC received was 80200053 after about 18% of download complete. MS social site seems to suggest this is common right now. Anyway, the DVD worked and nothing looks to be broken yet. Google will find the proper site if you need the full download.

Interesting.

I've been offered the Windows Update download today but haven't accepted it yet.

Have you installed yet?

If not, have a look at Windows 7 Service Pack 1 fails with error code 0x8004a029 before you install.

It mentions a possible registry change needed. I checked mine and I had the value that needed to be changed. I've changed it and rebooted since and no effect, so I am hopeful the install will go smoothly.

Let us know how it goes.

I googled the error I gave in my post and found

plenty of company. It's not unique to Win 7 updates. I already downloaded the DVD iso and burned it to disk for possible future use anyway and used that for the installation. I walked away when it said it might take over an hour so don't know the actual duration. I made a complete HD image prior to installing the service pack so no problems if I become dissatisfied. No obvious changes or new "features" do I see yet.

Here's the DVD ISO file

You'll need to download a validation tool and run it first.

Windows 7 SP1

It's quite large at almost 2 gb so solid broadband is nice. Those on dial up won't live long enough to see it complete.

Just A Reminder
Feb 24, 2011 4:40AM PST

Just a reminder before updating Windows 7 with SP1. If you have any prerelease versions of SP1 installed, uninstall them before installing the final release version. Also, some antivirus software might prevent SP1 from installing, or might slow down the installation. You can try temporarily disabling your antivirus software. If you do so, be sure to re-enable it after the service pack is installed.
