Soundmax card not working

Windows ME, Compaq presario 5000, soundmax driver from compaq driver site.
Not sure if it's the card or software/driver problem, or perhaps media player? When I open up Media player to play video, it freezes and I notice a program, <unknown> when I control alt delete. after I close the unknown program, media player unfreezes, but still no sound.
Also, when I try to update driver or reinstall from device manager, it says found not found when trying to copy files from the specified location (which is the correct location, but cannot find several missing files). Is there some kind of generic driver I can use, or maybe something is wrong with media player?

Please give us EXACT error messages found.

How long has this been occuring?

Have you scanned for spyware using multiple spyware removal tools?

Have you read the troubleshooting steps from the Soundmax site itself?

Have you tried restarting into Safe Mode, then deleting ALL instances of the SoundMax card, then restart the computer to let Windows re-recognize the device?
