Question

Sound/Headphones

Sep 8, 2015 8:59AM PDT

Recently the USB Port my headphones are plugged into will stop working. It is totally random, sometimes it never happens, other times it happens after a few moments of turning the PC on. I switch it to another USB port and it works fine for a while then does it again. Resetting the PC will make all the USB ports work again, but I cannot figure out what is doing it, this is a brand new computer. No errors are coming up that i can see, all the drivers are installed properly.

also, occassionally my sound will go out from my normal speakers, but if i switch to my HDMI sound, it works fine, maybe thats just my speakers, but thought id mention it.

My main concern is the USB ports, any help appreciated, thanks!

Answer
Most common?

1. Power settings in USB ports. It's widely discussed so I'll be very very short. Turn on power saving for USB.
2. You or someone built it. So here's what I run into far too often. The builder has no grasp on drivers and apps after the Windows install. Many run driver finders or limp along with what Windows found. This again is widely discussed. I can't write the post install work for every PC but there is a guide but you need to fill in the details.

If it's a PC you built yourself, it can be anything from hardware via settings to drivers. If it's intermitent, as you tell, it's more likely to be a hardware issue. And you have to solve it yourself by either replacing the defective hardware, applying the right settings or installing the right drivers. Not much help is possible there.

If you bought it new, claim warranty and let the shop fix it.

Does it happen also if you boot into Linux? if yes, it points to a hardware issue. If no, it points to a Windows driver or setting. Easy to check. It's probably the first thing the shop will do if you return the PC to them.

There was a typo there.

I meant to turn the power saving off.

I would have been more exact but the top post doesn't share machine details. That means I'll try anyway and share what it could be and since that's a well discussed item I stop short because the top doesn't tell me about the system.

It's like you telling me your car is having an issue but didn't reveal the make, model, year and story. You are part of the team here. Once in a while folk forget that.

Let's see what you are trying.

Maybe this one is best returned to its maker to get fixed. I offered the usual I try but was told it was not helpful. I will try given the details but I'm not there to click around and find the setting I mentioned. On top of that this setting moves around with the version OS and drivers.

I think you should make this machine's maker fix it or arrange for a refund for a working machine.
