SoundBlaster 16 / Adlib software emulator for Win98?

Sep 4, 2013 8:53PM PDT

Hopefully, this is the last issue I will have to deal with. Happy

I want to use my Windows 98 SE machine for retro gaming. I chose this OS because many good old games work best on it AND it has a decent DOS support.

I had hoped that it would be good enough to run old DOS games with sound without the need for an actual soundblaster card. And it only kinda, sorta works. On some games sound is fine, on some there is no sound, and on some I get sound both out of my headphones and the pc speaker at the same time.

The funny thing is, I do actually have in my possession a SoundBlaster Awe64 Gold, which is, I hear, one of the best audio cards for DOS games. The catch is, it's for the ISA interface and my motherboard is from 2005. It doesn't have any ISA ports. So, for now the only sound hardware I have is the integrated AC'97.

So, I've been struggling to find some sort of software emulator to go around the problem but I haven't found anything usable yet.

I'd appreciate any help, info or ideas.

For this one

You hit google and find prior discussions. The early PCI versions of the Soundblaster were pretty good at this but required us to install some TSR or helper app prior to loading the game.

Good luck with all this but many run these in Virtual Box for such reasons.

Hmm?

Yeah, about TSR, I've read somewhere that it enabled legacy support but... what is it exactly? an application? a driver plugin? can I download it somewhere?

oh and here's a little update: I got a CMI8738 PCI-SX sound card from my friend today and C-media claim on their website that it has legacy support for SBPRO, wavetable synth and all the toys but I haven't figured out how to get that support to work yet... Wolfenstein 3D still detects no sound card with it.

btw. Emulation's not really my thing. I found in the past that it's never as good as the real thing. The most annoying thing about emulation is, for me, a sound delay.

HMM!!

Blast from the past. Sorry but as I did set such up over a decade ago all I can do is write it was possible to get such working on PCI. However I find folk today blow out all 4 tires on their buggy when faced with such old systems.

Example? When to use or not use MSCDEX!
