sound volume icon is missing from tray!!!

by kpcrao / March 3, 2006 2:12 AM PST

I enabled the icon through control panel applet
but it won't show up. Has any one experienced the same problem? What is the solution.

Ps: The sound works fine and every thing else related.

Have you tried

seeing if it is hidden under "Hides inactive icons"?

Right click the Task Bar and select Properties. If the "Hide inactive icons" is ticked, click the Customize button.

See if the Volume icon is set as always show, or hide when inactive.

I hope this helps.

In reply to: Have you tried

Go to control panel and open sound and audio devices. Check the "place volume icon in the taskbar" This has also been posted at MS and another XP forum post which I will try to locate.

My volume icon and several others have been hijacked by my "Corel Photo Download Icon"--in "Customize" task bar the corel icon has replaced this and others but the old descriptions have remained.

Mine also had disappeared and it would not check the box
by shumonkey / March 4, 2006 5:50 AM PST

It turned out I went to my manufacter at and it gave me an older sound item. When I deleted it, XP put in the newer one with the sound icon. If it was put in by XP, there is a good chance that if you delete it, XP will automatically reinstall it. Then you can check the box for the icon if it is still is missing in the control panel. Here was my fix
by WOODS-HICK / March 6, 2006 6:18 AM PST

I found, in the i386 folder, SndVol.exe, mine is a volume control icon.

Copy this file and paste in convenient location.

Open Snd Vol.exe and drag it to Quick Launch. It works for me!

I agree that knowing the fix to a problem is courteous.
