on my machine running windows 2000 pro my sound works fine whenever I play a game or something but when I try to play an audio cd no sound comes out, what could be the problem?

On my Windows 2000 box, I use the analog playback method. For this to work, there is a small audio cable from the CDROM unit to the sound card. Then I need to use the Sound Mixer (it's called many things, so I leave it up to you to name yours) to push the mixing volume up and not MUTE that input.

so would that be the problem if the games put in the cd rom play sound and not audio cd's?

To recap:
"on my machine running windows 2000 pro my sound works fine whenever I play a game or something but when I try to play an audio cd no sound comes out, what could be the problem?"

"so would that be the problem if the games put in the cd rom play sound and not audio cd's?"

Yes. This little cable is often omitted by many. And the Sound Mixer is rarely mastered by all.
