Question

Sound not working

Oct 5, 2013 3:28AM PDT

I have a Dell computer with XP Pro. I cannot get sound to work. This happened overnight. I have checked connections, sound setup and they all seem fine. I'm guessing that it is a sound card problem. How can I diagnose a sound card problem and are there othe posibilities for my problem.

How did it get XP Pro on it?

And did they finish the install per Dell's instructions?

I find most folk explode as they discover how arcane a XP install is.

Sound not working

Bob: Thanks for the reply. I'm sorry I did not give more info. My XP is about 8 years old and has been near perfect. I'm old and do not want to learn new systems and hazzel with the tranfer of my large amounts of data and other special things I have accomplished with this computer.

I have been working on the problem of lack of sound and it appears it is only on videos I receive or access online. I don't think it is the sound card but maybe a codec problem.

I need help in further diagnosis.

So is it Youtube?

There's been a spat of questions like yours and it is due to how Google changed the default to mute. It's not a PC issue at all.

Sound not working

Bob: Thanks for your reply. I tried opening emails containing you tube videos on my wife's W7 computer and the sound will not play there either.

Is there a way to reset the sound to on as the default or at least be able to turn it on for each video?

Sorry but here it was a simple thing on YouTube

To the right of the speaker with the X is the volume control and I slid that up.

It's a shame they changed it since many folk are not in tune with PC or app use.
