sound mixer deleted after Yahoo messenger upgrade??

I run Windows XT. Recently upgraded Yahoo Messenger to 8.1 and I noticed the audio mixer at the bottom right of my computer screen somehow went away. I couldn't listen to the sound from YouTube and when I used Snapstream, I was limited in volume. Tried to upgrade Windows Media Player to 10.0 and now no sound anywhere on my computer. I don't know how I deleted this mixer or if that is my only problem, but does anyone know how I can get sound back??
