Sound interference on series 5 LCD TV when playing DVDs

Apr 4, 2009 1:03PM PDT

We recently purchased a series 5 (550) Samsung LCD TV. It is incredible with the exception of sound interruptions when playing DVDs. It only happens on those areas of the movie in which there are alot of diverse sounds and pitches. I can find no pattern with regards to a single pitch or volume. It is like the TV is overwhelmed and lasts for less than a second.

- we have changed cables and then replaced the RCA audio with digital - no change.

- Tried different jacks - no change.

- Only occurs with the DVD player - TV is fine.

- Interference occurs on TV speakers and sound system.

- DVD player is @ 7years old.

Ideas?

JSMcBroom,

If the picture isn't going out as well, it sounds like the processor in the DVD player may be experiencing issues.

Are you able to replicate the same parts of certain movies that are affected by playing them and having the same reaction? If so, you might want to try a different DVD player (or borrow one maybe?) to see if those same scenes produce the same result.

Keep me posted.

The picture is awesome.

The interference occurs at the exact same place every time the movie is played. My only concern is that it doesn't do it with the old TV (of course the sound is not nearly as good either).

I hope it is the DVD player.

JSMcBroom,

Ahh - I think we're closer to narrowing this down.

Did you hook it up with the same cable connections as the other television when you tested it? And it didn't have the problem with the other television?

Sound interruption

We started off with the same old RCA cables from the old TV. Then we put new RCA cables on. There seemed to be less interruption. Then we opted for digital cable. The interruption remained about the same.

Any bells ringing?

JSMcBroom,

Boy, I wish there were, but there aren't any bells ringing.

If those cables worked okay with the old television, and the sound interruption is only happening on your new TV, then it's probably a good time to suggest having your unit looked at.

Regardless of the cables, or the output method, the Samsung television experienced the sound drop, and the other one didn't - my preliminary and unofficial diagnosis leads me to believe that this points to something in the television causing this.

I wish it was a simpler fix, but I believe that to be the case.

I would call 800-SAMSUNG and have a technician dispatched to do a little digging. You might want to have the ability to reproduce the noise issue (with the DVD player and affected disc) and show the tech that while it doesn't happen on the old one, it does happen on the new one.

Keep me posted.

The plot thickens

I took the TV back to Best buy tonight (within 30 days of purchase) to see if they had any ideas. We hooked it up to one of their DVDs and used a DVD that had experienced problems at home. I could not hear any sound drops. He used RCA cables to connect the DVD player. Granted, there was some ambient store noise but we had the volume turned way up. I brought it back home, reconnected it and there were the drops in all of their glory.

I guess it is the DVD player but I don't understand how.
