Question

Sound going up and down.

Feb 9, 2015 7:55AM PST

I have Googled this problem and followed all the suggestions on how to correct the problem, but so far no luck.
It is on-board sound chip.
I have downloaded and installed the latest Realtek drivers. My keyboard has a volume control so downloaded the latest drivers and software for that.
My computer is a Alienware so downloaded the latest command center from Alienware and all the latest drivers for the computer.
Went into the control panel and sound and everything is good there.
Alienware tech support doesn't seem to have a clue and keep having stress test the graphics card, which I did and it test just fine.
This may be a coincidence, but this started about the time they changed out the liquid cooling system on the computer.
The OS is Windows 7 Home Premium.

What if you use a sound card?

Was thinking about that.

I had looked at a couple sound cards, but didn't want to go that route unless I had to.
Looks like that is what I will do.
Worst case scenario, if that doesn't fix the problem I can always send it back.
Thanks Bob.

It seems Dell Quickset is used.

So why not boot safe mode to remove the sound card in device manager, let it add it in. Also, see if the software for this one notes Dell's Quickset. Install that too.

Just to make sure.

I should go into safe mode-Device Manager- remove the sound card- re-boot and let the sound card/chip reinstall. Is that right?
If so I will give that a shot because nothing else is working.

Thanks again

Problem fixed

When getting into device manager and sound I saw there was not only Realtek, but also Nvidia high definition audio.
I uninstalled the Realtek then re-booted. I also updated the Nvidia drivers and the problem is gone.
Don't know which was causing the problem, but all is well now.
Thanks again. Grin
