sound broke

May 4, 2009 10:48PM PDT

I was using an electric perforater to put holes in paper . The lights would dim when I touched the perforater to the paper and I could hear a sound corresponding to the cycles per second of the perforater coming through the speakers even though the perforater was not connected at all to the computer. Now I can't get any sound from the computer. When I check on the computer to see the sound level and mute everything looks OK. The vertical meters are even moving so there apparently is sound occuring in the computer but it is not coming out the speaker output. Ther are no headphones connected and I checked the speaker connection. Could the high voltage of the perforater have damaged something? If so is there a way to find out waht is damaged without taking it to an expensive repairman? Thank you

Do the speakers work on another PC?
Do other speakers work on this PC?
Is there a separate connection for a headphone? Does that work?

I tried everything that I know how with no results. Tried earphones in the speaker output also. There is no seperate earphone jack. I'm asking my nephew who is good with computers but I don't know when or if he will come and check out this computer. I didn't know anyone answered because I got no email notification. Maybe I forgot to check the 'track this thread and email me when there are updates' box. I checked it this time to be sure. I'm only at this computer 2 times a week so I don't know when I will reply again. Is there any way to check if the sound card is working? When I right click the speaker icon in the task bar to check the sound devices it says they are working and I can see the vertical meters working. thank you
