Sound and Screen Saver do not work

May 20, 2005 4:33AM PDT

My sound and screen saver do not work, the sound mute off / mute on flashes, screen saver does not begin no matter what I set for the time. I also can not copy and paste . This has been an ongoing problem , I ran a system recovery using the CD's and that did not fix it. Before the recovery application on start up the computer would boot into CHKDSK , now it does not boot to that diagnostic program but the problems with no sound and screen saver are still with me. I have an HP Pavilion 7966, 80 GB hd, 512 MB ram , Windows XP Home is my OS. Any help would be appreciated.

Have you got XP installation disks
May 20, 2005 5:46AM PDT

There are several options
1/ We can try and fix one problem at a time - which sounds difficult given all your problem.
2/ Do a repair install of XP (which only replaces systems files)
3/Do a complete clean install of XP

For 2 & 3 above you need the winXP installation disk - if you only have repair disks from HP did they install a backup copy of the operating system on your hard disk?

The first thing to do is run spyware and virus programs - so let me know your setup as far as that goes.

Best to answer these question first so get back to me.

I do not have Windows XP installation cd's, they were not furnished with my computer and I have not bought them. The system recovery cd's installed a clean version of XP and supposedly put it back to the original version installed when the computer was new. I run virus scan and spyware blocker/killer daily. No viruses show that can not not be removed and all spyware is deleted.

Try this first

Try this on line HP diagnostics/analysis of your system.

Without the XP installation disk we are extremely limited in what we can do - With these type of OEM computers only the manufacturer really knows how to fix the problem.
I am a bit concerned when you say you have already used the "recovery" disks - Does this mean you restored the system back to when you got the machine - as in the "recovery CD" reformatted and installed the system EXACTLY as it was the day you got it??
If this is the case it would lead me to believe that all your problems are stemming from a hardware problem - perhaps your hard disk is starting to fail.

Also - read this article - it may all be a bit too late for you but there are some interesting links

Let me know how you go.

Best to talk
May 22, 2005 6:40AM PDT

If you like, it is probably best if we communicate directly via email, or better still MS messenger - this way we can cover a lot more ground as I have a 100 questions to ask you given all your problems.
click on my profile and send me an email with your return email address and/or your messenger name. Note when you send me an email via CNET your email address is NOT known to me so you have to include it in the message.

Sounds like your keyboard
May 26, 2005 10:26PM PDT

I have seen a very similar problem before. Does your keyboard have special buttons for the sound volume? If you have or can get access to another keyboard, try it out. I think this should remedy your problem. If not, let me know. Take care!
