Sounds like you've managed to make a mess of things, so your best option at this point is to just reformat before you get too settled.

That will take care of the two operating systems issue quite nicely. Then be sure to download the proper drivers for your sound card. There may not be any stock drivers included with Windows, so check over the various CDs that likely came with your system and see if you can't find them. Otherwise download them from the vendor's website.

1. The two operating systems.

It's more likely that you have two entries in BOOT.INI To learn about BOOT.INI, type XP BOOT.INI into http://www.google.com and you'll find out what this file does and how to edit it. Be sure to only delete the line you don't want.

In closing, WHY FIX THIS? It could be "cosmetic" and the repair can result in a non-booting OS if you mess it up.

2. Sound.

You didn't reveal anything about your system, but Microsoft rarely installs DRIVERS for your sound card. you'll want to IDENTIFY YOUR SOUND CARD, find the drivers and install them. There can be issues with VOLUME CONTROL and SPEAKER SELECTION that can cause sound cards to be working, but no output. Given so little information (none?) about your system, you have some investigating to do.

i want to fix this because i have two windows on my computer taking up space. it's not just the boot.ini. file that i have two of. what i really need to know is if you can uninstall one of the windows operating systems without starting completely over.if so, how? i messed up my computer bad where i couldn't log on so i reinstalled windows, but i didn't want it to overwrite or delete my files so i installed the new windows to a new file ( windo ) instead of windows after that i could logon and got my old configurations back, after reinstalling all my programs on my computer.if there is anything about my computer you need to know ask, i'm not sure what you would need to help me.

Then share your BOOT.INI contents.

With that, one could figure out which WINNT or WINDOWS directory is the duplicate.

I recently went from ME to XP and had probs with no sound. I found out that I needed a driver that would work for my "Digital" Boston speakers and the driver I had wouldn't allow me to change from "Analog" to "Digital" so I had to download an older driver to get my speakers to work. Note: Windows Update always show that there's a Windows XP Driver update available and guess what it is???? It's the update that won't work with my "Digital" Speakers. I would check out the driver and make sure that it's set for whatever you have.........be it "Digital" or "Analog". Also, Mr. Proffitt knows his stuff so I'd pay attention to his insight potential.
