Sotec WL7160C problem

Sep 25, 2004 12:55AM PDT

I bought a Sotec WL7160C laptop earlier this year (January) and it was working fine until a couple of months ago. The laptop seems to shut off abnormally without warning (something like a power outage). I thought it had something to do with the battery, so i switched to AC, but it still keeps shutting off. I realize that this only happens when i'm compiling something on Linux, or playing games on Windows, or doing some image editing, FTP file transfers, full virus scans, Defragmentation of the hard disk, etc. I did a full virus scan at first but that didn't seem to help it shuts off in the middle of the scan. I finally decided to send it in for repairs since i still have the warranty. However when i got the laptop back, they told me that they've fixed everything, but the laptop still keeps shutting off. I've sent the laptop in for 4 times already this year and they keep saying that they've fixed it. They've even tried to deny me of anymore services and now i'm out of ideas on what to do. I really don't mind about paying them for servies (if that's what they want that is) but all i ask for is for that my laptop to be fully functioning again. If anyonehas any ideas on how to help me i'd be really glad. I appreciate any help i can get.

similar problem
May 22, 2005 10:43PM PDT

G'day, mate.
I am facing a similar problem.
I bought a sotec overseas and have been very happy with the package so far.
Having now been home for a while, my computer has started facing the same problem. I initially thought was battery, power cable, viruses or O/S, but unable to fix satisfactorily.
So I recently formatted HD and installed Linux to see if was software problem, but no, still remains.
The "computer log" says that my CPU (?) is reaching critical temperature and the computer is shutting off in response to that.

Have you resolved your problem?
Was it something similar? or did you invest in another computer, like Im tempted to do.

This company is well known.

There is no cure if people let them off the hook. But with Sotec (and Avertec which are the same people from all indications), it's yours and the warranty appears to be worthless.

Once you get over it, try the usual dusting out of the machine and refreshing the heatsink thermal paste. No one will warrant repairs on their machines. At least those that know about them.

Try a laptop cooling pad and try not to run intense games or such. Set the CPU to it's slowest speed if you can.

Still frustrated

Cheers for your input, mate.
I read a few forums of Sotec. Although machines seem decent at first glance, after service care seems practically non existant.

Anyway,I'm still trying. Actually, I've had trouble opening the box to clean it out. There seems to be some kinda lock on the right side panel that doesnt allow me to get in.
Taking it to a mates house today, and if we can pop it, then probably to comp. shop for assistance.
Any thoughts?

Fixed - maybe

Thanx once again for your ideas.
Finally popped the top, in a blaze of glory.
Heat sink and fan were choked with dust - almost looked and felt like, well.., felt. Happy

So today cleaning it all out, put back together and see how if spot runs.
Thanks once again.

Spot should do fine.

I'm a bit surprised to hear a p4 3GHz laptop to be that dusty. With love, chastise the owner lightly.
