My TV is making a sort of sizzling noise and giving off an ozone-like odor. Is it safe to operate? Is there anything I can do to solve the problem?

Is the 'sizzling noise' when just when you turn On or Off the TV???

I've got a Sony KD 30XS955 HD CRT, looks like it is the same as your but mine has the 'Super Fine Picture' tube. When I turn on my CRT, the tube puts out 'a lot' of static, when you turn ON the TV you can hear the static if the screen is dirty & when turning OFF you almost always hear something like Rice Crispys for maybe 5 sec or less coming from the screen & also you hear the degauss click. My TV has always made these sounds & have had it 3 or 4 years now.

For smell, nothing from any of my TV's, CRT, LCD or SXRD

Try opening the TV cabinet, unplug the TV & clean the inside of dust bunnies, could be the heat from the TV + dust inside is putting out a odd smell.

The sizzling sound remains on. I have also had popping noises when I change the channel.
