Sony Vaio won't start after fan replacement

Apr 30, 2015 1:40AM PDT

Hi all,

Recently replaced the fan in my Sony Vaio PCG-71211M as the old one was getting so noisy due to having loose bearings I think. In diagnosing the problems I took apart and put back together the laptop with very little problem however when i tried to start it up after fitting the new fan I got nothing. No fan noise, no lights, nothing. The green light on the power button comes on for a second and then just flashes periodically.

I have tried a hard reset to no avail, Could anyone think of anything which I may have overlooked, perhaps a switch or fitting inside which I knocked, I know this is clutching at straws but that is where I'm at!!

Thanks,
Matt

Get out the VOM

And measure that CMOS BIOS battery.
Also the power switch can be tested with the Ohm setting.

Beyond that it's not uncommon for the strain to cause the motherboard to fail. Be sure to compare that cost to a new laptop.

CMOS battery at 2.7V so seems fine, I assume the power button light wouldnt do anything if it had gone high resistance.

As in the strain of changing the fan?

A CR2032 would need to be 3 and over Volts.

So that's under the mark we use for "good."

As to the strain, with the change to Pb free solder, that's one of the issues of the day.

Not a CR2032

It's a 2.4V battery pack of 2 small batteries in series I assume or they might be in parallel, irrelevant I guess. But for a 2.4V rated battery I guess 2.7V is fine, what do you think?

I'm not really sure what you mean?
