Sony Vaio with Japanese Windows ME - I don't speak Japanese!

Jul 3, 2007 11:50AM PDT

My husband bought me a cute Sony Vaio from a Japanese guy at a garage sale. Very cute little thing, but it has Windows ME personal,Japanese version on it. I don't speak Japanese. I have tried lots of ways to change language or get online (then I don't care what language the OS is).... but to know avail.

I thought I might get a version of XP (or XP upgrade) and just install over the Japanese ME Personal.

Any thoughts anyone?

I don't know if this will work.

Start>Control panel>Regional and language options>Language>Details

But's all in Japanese!

Thanks Tom, I thought of changing the language options, but it's all in Japanese, so I can't work out where I'm going! Plus, because it's Windows Personal, OS is slightly different & also some of the commands are backwards, but not all.

Again - issue with this OS is that it's Japanese, and I can't work out how to use it. If I wipe it all & start again, I'll be fine - but can anyone tell me if just installing XP will do it?

Japanese don't have to talk to India.

When a Sony owner in Japan calls Customer Service, they get someone who fluently speaks Japanese (shock!).

If you change to English, you will end up in India where you won't be able to understand a word they say.

Perhaps you might want to learn Nihon-go?

A clean install ...

of your preferred language version of your preferred OS is the only way to go. Be sure you've got the right drivers from Sony, or be prepared to run Belarc or Everest to find out what's in the box and find the drivers elsewhere.

Hope this helps.
