sony vaio pcg-frv25 won't power up even when plugged in

Oct 6, 2009 11:18PM PDT

hello,
i recently bought a sony vaio laptop model pcg-frv25 that worked well for a couple of days. all of a sudden, without any major occourances, even when plugged in, it won't turn on. the two lights blink briefly but nothing else. the battery appears to charge and i have tried it with and without the battery. i also read a posting that said to hold down the power button with the cord disconnected and the battery out but this does nothing either. i paid $125.00 for this because i have never had hundreds to spend on a laptop and now i'm back to zero!i know this unit is 5 years old but i would greatly appreciate any help or tips. ---oli

Sounds like the old power jack issue.

As that is written about in this forums top post (called a sticky) I won't duplicate that here.

You have to reveal if you repair your own electronics. That is, to proceed you have to tell if you use, own Volt meters and more. If not then your best bet is to get your money back.

THE SOONER THE BETTER.

thanks for responding so quickly! i am on a friends computer and connot respond immediately sometimes. i would say that i have under my belt the basics of computers. (no meters, etc.) i bought this computer and it had xp home edition on it. it worked great when i brought it home. i them installed xp professional as if it were new. it then worked even better for about 5 days. then after it was off for about 2-3 hours, then it just wouldnt turn on. (perhaps i should have mentioned this but i am a noob to these forums) as there was nobody here but me, i know nothing was spilled on it, etc. i bought this on craigslist from an older lady that seemed very trustable. perhaps i can sell it for parts and start saving again!

Power, power jack and power adapter issues. If the charging light on the laptop doesn't come on then read our top post (called a sticky) and google about laptop jack repair. It's very high on the hit parade of this issue and symptom.

sony vaio pcg-frv25 won't power up even when plugged in

Hi, You may have solved this problem by now but I've had several PCG FRVs and one of them was giving this problem. I traced it to the flat ribbon cable that connects the power button to the motherboard. It has several sharp bends in it and mine must have broken some of its fine wires. I replaced the cable and all is well again. However the symptoms you describe could be caused by many different things. If the computer would run for a while and then freeze - thats often caused by the cooling vents being blocked with dust and fluff. That buildup of dirt ALWAYS occurs eventually and can only be cured by opening up the laptop, seperate the heatsink from the processor, take it out of the laptop and blow it out with compressed air is the best way. Reinstall with fresh heat sink paste.
The Flexible Flat Cable that I mention above is 'Sony Flexible Flat Cable (FFC) Connects To Power Button - E97252-H' and can be found here http://www.impactcomputers.com/e97252-h.html# but is a bit expensive of course! Really need to test your existing cable (has 22 strands) for continuity to be sure that really is the problem.
Good luck.

nope, haven't been able to fix it yet. just got another cpu for a great price as a last resort and that did not do the trick.

THANKS SO MUCH!
