More wide spread than you know and not brand specific. I will not digress but share two common workarounds and fixes.
1. Google up TOUCHFREEZE which some find to help.
2. Forget about the pad and use some external mouse.
My laptop is 3 months old. I had problems with the mouse touch pad right out of the box. I called Sony and they sent a tech to replace it. Then, for a week it was good. But then it started happening again. Now, it had been 5 weeks. Best Buy would have take this POS back if it were within one month. But becuase it is 1 month and a week. I have to eat it. I have tried to get Sony to do something about this 4 times. I am DISGUSTED and will NEVER purchase another sony product. Its not that there product is bad. Its great and I loved this laptop before this happened. Its there customer service. They dont care about getting this laptop fixed.
The way it was left was I can send this laptop to CA for repair but shipping is on me and I lose whatever time they have the unit for. They gave me the run around 4 times. What a joke. This is definitely an inherent hardware problem that Sony is obviously just trying to do damage control on.
Beware of Sony Laptops. For you to will run into my problem as well!
