Question

Sony VAIO CPU upgrade

Aug 24, 2018 11:30PM PDT

Greetings. I'm planning to upgrade my Sony VAIO VPCEE23FX. The stock processor is a AMD® Athlon™ II X2 P320 (2.1 GHz TDP 25W) and I wanted to upgrade it and have two options:

-AMD Phenom II N660, 3.0 GHz, TDP 35W.
-AMD Phenom II P650, 2.6 GHz, TDP 25W.

I want to know if it's possible to upgrade to the N660, but if it's not I'll take the P650.

Thanks.

First check if the existing CPU can be removed; it might be soldered and then you can't replace it.

Then check the technical documentation of this model to see what CPU's are supported and what BIOS version they need. Only the maker of the motherboard can tell.

Thanks for your reply. I have opened my laptop for maintenance purposes and it can be removed. There isn't any information available for this bios, but I find a webpage where they made a benchmark using a very similar model and in the processor they used a P650. I want to know if there is any problem if I upgrade to a 35W processor.

Contact Sony and ask what cpu's their bios supports.

The mobo may support an upgrade but that does not mean the bios will.

Ok I got the P650 and installed it. When I tried to turn it on, didn't do anything, but then I kept pushing the button and it only beep the charging led. I tried with my old processor and happened the same (this never happened to me). Tried installing a new power button and had the same result. It looks like the mb just died, any suggestions?

Sadly

An example why I don't change laptop CPUs. Too iffy and if the new (?) CPU has a fault we can lose a board.

In hindsight there are usually other areas we can gain performance today. My favorite is to switch out the HDD for SSD. That change can really make an old dog fly.
