Question

Sony TV Fails to Recognize Sony Blu-Ray

Apr 15, 2017 9:03AM PDT

TV is a Sony XBR-55X850D. Blu-Ray player is a Sony BDP-S3200, connected to the TV's HDMI 2 port. When I turn the Blu-Ray on, the TV switches to HDMI 2 but I get no signal from the Blu-Ray. I've confirmed that the cable is OK. The only way to resolve it is to unplug the TV from A/C power, plug it back in and let it reboot. The TV is brand new. The Blu-Ray player is around three years old. Any ideas?

Always call this in.

I worry the HDMI port is the new 2.x and the player is 1.x. There are cases this never works and well, some folk get upset.

Match the HDMI levels between devices to avoid this issue.

Also, call the seller now to tell them it may be coming back if the seller and Sony don't fix this.
The call to Sony should have them check the firmware is current and discuss the HDMI 1.x and 2.x compatibility issues.

I wondered about the HDMI versions as well. The Blu-Ray documentation doesn't say it's HDMI-1, but since it doesn't specify HDMI-2, it's probably safe to assume it's HDMI-1. That HDMI-2 isn't backward-compatible with their own product is disappointing.

I believe I can update the firmware from here but I'll contact Sony to get this sorted out.

Thanks.

HDMI 2.x is sometimes backwards compatible.

But not always and leads to really bad discussions where folk demand it works. I know it works most of the time.

I think you understand this well enough to not get upset with other than the makers.

Firmware up to date all around is best.
