Sony STR-DA-5800ES going into protedtor mode

May 12, 2015 9:05AM PDT

I bought a Sony STR-DA-5800ES A/V receiver July 7, 2014. I have just sent it in for the fourth time because it went into protector mode and will not reset.
It doesn't have a problem playing movies, but when playing concert DVD's it seems that the receiver can't handle the constant higher volume that is put out, and then goes into protector mode.
Considering that this is Sony's top of the line receiver this should not be happening.
I am using Infinity Primus speakers that I bought new the same time as the receiver. The fronts are P363 Towers 8 ohms with a power range of 10-200 watts.
The center is a PC361 8 ohm 10-150 watts. The two rears a P163 8 ohm 10-150 watts.
I'm very dissatisfied and at this point I'd like to be able to return it and buy something differant.

Any ideas or solutions?

Sure. This model came out in 2012.

And a look around shows a 5 year warranty. What's not to love? Let Sony fix it.

It costs $60 to ship and the real problem is that I'm not able to listen to my music dvd's at the level I like

Sounds cheaper than the alternative.

I've had great luck with Sony in warranty repair. Can't see why the -1 vote. Then again today's consumer is expecting more than ever before. Hope you find your solution.

You can

try adding power amps to buffer the load. Usually the fronts suck the most power so a 200-400W stereo PA will do. Maybe you could add a powered sub instead to take the high current LFE load off the Sony output. Go to an audio shop for advise.

That might help except that I think that when you buy a top of the line product it should be able to function without having to spend additional money or add additional equipment to do what it was supposed to be designed for in the first place.

If they won't repair it or replace it...

...and you don't want to add a second amp, what other options are there?

Seriously though- you sent it back four times ($240)?!? After the second incident, why weren't you calling their corporate number or hammering their social media reps until you get the results you need. That, unfortunately, is what is required of late.

I am also curious to know the actual volume level you are setting it at when listening to the DVDs? And is the equipment space well ventilated? Understand, if you are listening to it for longer periods at say 7 or 8, I can see why the unit might get that hot and fail. At that stage anyway, time to go with more powerful separates, or a second amp (as has been suggested) if you are married to the control features of this particular Sony.

I am wondering if the problem might be the speakers.

I see the rating as 200W. but is that RMS or music power. The rating of the Sony is 130w. RMS. which I think is a lot. I am surprise those speakers hasn't got blown away yet.
