Well, hi def is 'better' than standard def. Just like a TV. But more expensive also. Your choice here.

Yes, HD is better than SD. Most people know that. Which camera meets the OP's requirements in the most optimal way?

Not much requirements.

Indoor and outdoor. Sony or Canon. Less than USD 600.
Nothing about:
- storage (hard disk, tape, SD card)
- battery life
- zooming
- size and weight
- ability to take decent pictures

Better for HD means "sharper pictures". It doesn't say anything about those other requirements. It might not be best for the OP.

- A visit to Sony or Canon sites would list their HD models.
- A visit to a number of on-line shops would list their price.
- That would give a shortlist. The more added requirements the shorter the shortlist.
- Then with that shortlist visit review sites. Some webshops have customer reviews also.
- Then see what your favorite shop has to offer.

That's what I should do.
