I was considering on purchasing the iriver in the past, but when I saw it in person, it felt so cheap...but if you want the features...i would go with it...but if you want to go for show and design then go with sony...although if I were to purchase a flash based mp3 player i would go with the iAudio U2...

I absolutely love the look of the NW-E505. It's absolutely gorgeous. The OLED display down to the battery life. Everything about it. It'd be the first choice, if not for the software you have to use with it. Sonicstage is a bloated piece of crap, more often than not. It's slow, and is buggy as all get out. Otherwise, the Sony is a great device.

iRiver is not nearly as flashy, but it is a good device. Sounds good, and is built well enough. And it runs off of a single AA battery. So, that's always a plus. It doesn't feel as solid as the Sony, but is still very decent. The iRiver music manager, though a bit of a hassle, is nowhere near as frustrating as Sonicstage. So, yeah.

I've got two minidisc players, though, and have to use Sonicstage to transfer music anyway. So, I'm used to Sonicstage already. Therefore, I'd go for the Sony. Decent to good sound, solid design, crisp OLED display. And the estimated 50 hour battery life is attractive, too.

Sony vs Iriver
Sound: 0Shocked (both are among the best u can buy)
Power: 0:1 (the sony has the longer life/load - but the iriver uses standard cells with i prefer)
Durability 1:1 (the sony looks definitly more stable
Codecs 1:2 (the sony only knows pseudo-mp3 and atrac3)
Software 1:3 (i've read, that with a firmwareupdate the iriver can get rid of it's software)
Size 2:3 (the triangle-sharped style can be a lil bit disturbing - well the costs for an AA Cell Happy

as u see still a close race and i havn't any of those, so i don't know nothing about practical usage ...
