Ive had this Sony lcd TV less than a year. Tonight all of a sudden a grayish transparent vertical band just appeared. Any ideas what this is?

At least it's less than a year. That's one reason for basic warranties. The "bathtub curve" is still in play so you know failures will still occur.

Make the call as soon as possible since some don't and let it fall out of warranty.

And it can be the panel, board and sometimes a connection/cable. Given the cost of OOW (out of warranty) repairs, everyone must pick their comfort with extended warranties.

One thing I will write. Get the maker's warranty rather than a store or 3rd party.
