Answer
Try wired headphones to the headphone jack.

sony headphone with tv

Thanks for reply. Another old headphone with suitable Jack worked well, the Jack on Sony doesn't fit, instructions for Sony say reverse cable - put single Jack into infrared box and other end (two leads, one red and one white) into red and white sockets on TV, there are two sets of R & W sockets on tv! I think I have tried both, if an adapter for the Sony is the only answer I could possibly try and get one.
Again thanks and hope you can advise next best option.

The red white TV sockets are inputs, not output.

That's why that doesn't work. The jack doesn't fit sounds like it's either tight/new or just the wrong size. There are adapters too many out there. Time to get a headphone jack that fits.

Sony headphones to tv

Again many thanks, nearly gave up, fear of damaging TV but after a number of attempts suddenly without undue pressure it went home, headphones now working beautifully. Has saved me a great deal of time, journey and expense for urgent solution, thanks.
