To avoid the hassle that Jodie went thru..

Before you call Sony, go to Sony.com to support news for your camcorder. You should see a post there by Sony explaining to you that they will fix your camcorder. Then call Sony and when the tech has no idea what you are talking about, you can tell them to refer to this post at Sony.com by Sony. I was also on the phone for a hour and was switched to another tech but i had the web site information in front of me to explain it to them. Sony sent me a shipping label by email. Good Luck!

Thank you for your support and patronage of Sony products.
It has recently come to our attention that a limited number of products, manufactured prior to March 2004, that incorporate a certain type of image sensor device (CCD) may exhibit the following:
When the product is used in camera mode, the LCD panel and/or electronic viewfinder exhibits either a distorted image or no image at all.
We have determined that this only occurs in a limited number of devices, but may be accelerated if they are exposed to hot and humid environments.
From October 3, 2005 through October 2, 2007, Sony will repair, free of charge, affected products exhibiting the above-mentioned problem where it is caused by the image sensor device. Sony will also cover the cost of shipping and handling to service to correct this issue.

Please contact the Sony Customer Information Services Center for further assistance at 1-866-703-7669.

Sony repaired camera in about 3 weeks
Nov 23, 2005 3:27AM PST

I got my TRV-33 back about 3 weeks after sending it in, not counting the month I spent trying to get this issue resolved and all the run around I went through to get Sony to actually say they would fix it and send a shipping label. It seems fine now. Good Luck.

Scary,
I get the problem figure I am the only one in the world. A little google search , and I find this link- tells me this happens to a lot of Sonys after 2 years.
Checked my reciept - and it is exactly 2 years.

Called them up - she goes through the script - reset etc. tells me they will replace it - they will email me a pre-paid UPs label.

Thanks to those who helped and to those who will need it - feel good knowing you will have help!!!

BTW - they must do the whole script so don;t bother trying to cut to the chase.

Thanks

Hi,

I remember seeing in camcorderinfo.com on one of the posts saying SOny is ready to fix this porblem until 2007 free of cost including shipping. You might want to check the authenticity of information however I have seen it in the camocrderinfo.com website. Okay I did a lot of search and got the post atlast. Here is the link below. Maybe you can check the authenticity before going further. I am not sure if I am allowed to post another website link here however I thought it will be useful for many so I posted it below.

Incase the link does not work. Maybe you can try searching on the following subject.

Sony DCR TRV 250 "Moisture Condensation" light
Oct 6, 2005 1:08AM PDT

The moisture condensation light has come on and despite following all the suggested options, I cannot get it go off. I have even let it sit the last couple of months and when I tried to use it again still the same thing. Is this any relation to the black screen all of you have been talking about or is this a different problem and does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

UPDATE: Sony agreed to fix my DCR-HC40's failed CCD
Oct 6, 2005 10:02AM PDT

I spoke again with customer service this evening and nicely but firmly explained to the CS rep that I felt it was unreasonable that so many other cameras in Sony's product line, including the DCR-HC30, can be repaired at no cost under their latest service bulletin but that my DCR-HC40 would not be. The rep transferred me to a supervisor, who then transferred me to Customer Satisfaction after explaining that Sony would be forever losing me as a customer.

The call with Customer Satisfaction was short, as the first-level supervisor had documented my concerns, and within 5 minutes (following the previous combined 20 minutes of hold time), had agreed to provide a "one-time accomodation" code for the repair to be performed at no cost to me.

So, if you have a DCR-HC40 and have seen your CCD die as have so many other Sony camcorder owners, be persistent, make it clear that you've read of others online with your *exact* model having the same issue that the other covered models are experiencing, and don't take the stock repair cost as the final answer.

Good luck!

P.S. I do have to pay for shipping to them, but that's dramatically less than the $216 in labor they wanted previously.

sony will fix at a discounted rate
Jul 11, 2007 3:32AM PDT

My DCR-HC42 also failed under similar circumstances.

I was able to get a 25% discount off the usual repair cost. I believe the key to this is that my unit was less than two years old. I had to speak with a customer service specialist however, so ask to one when speaking with Sony re: repairs.

TRC 38 went blank also
Nov 8, 2005 2:07AM PST

Well, I came here to try to find a solution to my blank screen on my Sony TRC 38. Little did I know that so many others are also effected. Guess that ends finding a solution. But, I did contact that lawyer (see his posting)about his class action suit. Sony should not get away with this, at least not if I can help it. Maybe if enough sign on, Consumer Reports et al will start reporting this about this sub-par camera company.

TRV460 have same problem - Sony will repair after the call
Dec 17, 2005 7:59AM PST

Thanks for the tips on this forum.
I call the number for my TRV460 that is having the same problem. Went thru a short troubleshooting steps to reset the camera with no result. The Sony rep gave a return order and will repair the camcorder. Fairly short and painless phone call to Sony support.

Thanks for all who shared their problem in the forum. It makes easier to explain the problem because now Sony knows that CCD failure is somewhat widespread.

how about Canada?

1)))

I tried calling that number to get a repair done, but it does not work (I'm in Toronto, Canada). I will try calling Sony Canada today.

However, does anyone have suggestions/comments regarding this? Should I still do it through Sony USA?

2)))

Also, I need to make sure I'm having the same problem as what Sony is expecting.

I have the TRV-19. It's just over 2 years old. The LCD screen and recording started going dark (not completely blank) when I try to record. It does this randomly and I did try cleaning the heads but the screen still goes dark. The LCD screen eventually goes back to normal color but will go dark again after some time. Menus are fine.

Please let me know if this sounds like the same problem as everybody else?

Thank you.

Sony Canada
Nov 18, 2005 7:37PM PST

I live in North Bay, Ontario, Canada. I have the same CCD problems as several other people in this discussion. I have called countless numbers in Canada and the US looking for service and finally brought it to my local Sony Store with a photocopy of the service bulletin from the Sony website. They have shipped it out for repair and I am waiting to hear back.

Sony denies it is a problem with the TRV68
Sep 30, 2006 4:30PM PDT

After speaking to their Customer Service, they deny that this is a problem with this model. 3 months after buying the unit,I had it repaired under warranty due to the image starting to fail. 2 years later and only a couple of tapes filled, I get the black screen. They keep on telling me to bring it into to get it serviced and it is not their problem. I got an estimate and it is not worth fixing. Therefore it looks like it is my problem though there seems to be several people in the same situation as I am. NO MORE SONY FOR ME!!

My Sony got fixed
Oct 1, 2006 11:55PM PDT

I went into the Sony Website and there is a memo that states that if it is a factory problem, they will fix it. I went through the steps and I printed out a label and I returned the video camera to Sony. Within 10 days they fixed my video camera and returned it to me. I did not have to spend one penny. I was very satisfied with the service. Have you checked their website? It's a little hard to find but if you search, the memo is there. Hope this helps!

re: Same TRV22 issue - but can Sony charge this fee ?
Mar 4, 2006 1:21AM PST

Same issue - runny and blank and runny again.

Called Sony Australia.
They directed me to one of their Service Centre.
They charged me AUD$88 for assessment fee (opening
up to inspect).
That's fine (I thought) and to clarify, i asked if
it is refundable if it is the same issue as everyone else in here have.
They say 'NO'.

Is that what Sony Australia meant by 'Free of Charge'?

That is simply not right!!

Can Sony do this?

Sony Camcorder failure - something to expect these days?
Jun 17, 2006 8:22PM PDT

Same thing happened here, not even 2 years after buying, after the warranty expired, the Sony DCR TRV33 failed. not sure what to do, just gonna have to buy new one. first screen went black, camera was working, but could not record. now, it's not working at all. hmm?!?!
I guess it seems to be popular trend these days, as you all can see it on TV. shortly after the warranty expires, consumer electronics seem to fail the owner unmistakenably.
Is it the hunger of todays huge corporations for more money that is "failing" these products? Timebomb that's waiting to click just after the warranty expires?

YOU BE THE JUDGE!!! Wink))

Thanks...
