Sony handycam capturing video -- pls help

Hello,
I have the Sony Handycam Digital 8 DCR-TRV280. I'm having problems with the quality of the video I'm capturing on my computer. I connect the camera to my PC and capture footage. When I capture footage, it plays back in a tiny iPod-sized square. The quality is great. But if I view the footage any larger, the video quality is terrible. Pixelized and grainy. Looks like it's 30 years old. I tried capturing with both the Sony software that came with the Handycam and Windows Movie Maker and get the same result: pixelized. I believe I'm capturing the footage at at the highest quality. Please help me solve this problem.

Thank you so much.

firewire cable?

Thank you very much for the response. Sorry for my ignorance but...what is a firewire cable? Where do I get one? Will this improve playback quality on a full-size screen?

Thank you.
