Sony DH1758 1.7 telephoto conversion lens
Sep 23, 2006 7:12AM PDT

If you are going to be shooting at 1X to 12X, don't even put the conversion lens on the camera.

Use it only when you are planning to zoom between 13X and 20.4X.

In most cases when you exceed 10X you will need to use a tripod. Some people carry a beanbag to support the camera, instead of a tripod.

At extreme optical zooms, it is near impossible to hand hold the camera and get clear photos. Many times it is also impossible to get the focus mechanism to lock.

Image stabilization can only do so much.

When the camera is supported on a tripod, you should get some excellent long zoom images.

Set the camera on a solid surface and take a long zoom test shot, you will see the difference.

About the tele converter & the Handycam DCR-SR42
Dec 26, 2007 1:01AM PST

Hey,

I have a Handycam DCR-SR42, and a problem.
Its pictures quality is really bad (eg : http://reviews.cnet.com/4326-6501-6572962-4.html?tag=ss_thmb). So as you can see, it looks pretty bad. I heard that if you put some optical lens on it, the picture quality gets better. So I bought this lens, the tele converter VCL-DH2630 from Sony. I don't really see the picture quality's difference, it stills what it has always been, exept of course that the zoom has a much longer distance. I have to put some wide-angles lens to get and see an entire object close from me I guess.
Do you know how can I make better quality pictures from using the same camera?

Thanks.

Still Photos from Camcorders
Dec 26, 2007 7:10AM PST

The only thing you can do to improve still images from a camcorder is to make sure that you do not use any digital zoom, and make sure there is no movement by the subjects or the camera.

If you want better quality still images you must use a digital camera.

A typical digital camera has a seven megapixel CCD sensor.
The Sony DCR-SR42 has a CCD sensor that is less than one megapixel (680k).
It cannot produce the detail you need for a picture larger than about 4 x 3 inches.

Here are some sample photos from a $150 7 megapixel digital camera:

2.0 telephoto conversion lens for Sony DSC-H5
Nov 8, 2011 1:21AM PST

Hi!

Will a 2.0 telephoto conversion lens do the same, and would I also have to use a tripod for best results? Is there any special adjustments I need to make on my Sony DSC-H5 for it to work properly? Thank you for your help!

Telephoto Conversion Lens
Nov 8, 2011 6:47AM PST

The same comments I made about the Sony Conversion lens applies.

The 2X converter will provide a bit more distance.

Multiply the camera lens maximum zoom by 2.

I assume the lens you are wanting to use is not made by Sony.

Then quality is an unknown.
So is the lens mounting.
Make sure that the thread size is the same as the Sony Conversion lens.
Some of the off-brand converter lenses have to have a step-up or step-down adapter.
Read the specifications carefully.

Tripod

The further you zoom, the more you need a steady camera hand.
If you are not a watch repairman or a surgeon, I doubt that your hands are steady enough to take consistent non-blur pictures at maximum zoom.
