I think you really want to try to see what can be done. However an easy explanation is that in that dark place the LCD will look very bright compared to what it would have looked like in proper lighting. Think it over a few times until it dawns on you.

There is a tool I use to diddle with the brightness and contrast of video. It's called VIRTUAL DUB. If your video is in some MPEG, AVI or such you can use Virtual Dub and its filters to try to pull up the brightness and see if you can get something usable. I offer no support or teach Virtual Dub. There are sufficient online manuals about it.
