Sony Cybershot W370

Mar 17, 2010 10:43PM PDT

Has anybody done a comprehensive review on this camera? It looks just like what I am looking for, but I am still waiting for CNET to review it. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Sony W370
Mar 18, 2010 1:13AM PDT

The W370 was introduced on Jan 7, 2010.

The problem is, no one can get their hands on one.
Impossible to find in the stores.
Reviewers can not get one.

This usually indicates there is a problem than needs to be solved.

Amazon says they now have them in stock.
They have only sold a few.
There is no real world information available.
Not even sample photos.

There is lots of concerned talk about the idea of putting 14.1 megapixels on such a small CCD sensor assembly.
The Canon G10 had 14.7 megapixels on a larger CCD sensor assembly but abandoned the practice with the G11.
The G11 has only 10 megapixels on the same larger CCD sensor assembly.

This was done to improve the noise problem generated by putting too many megapixels on a small surface.

Sony seems to be at odds with conventional wisdom.

One person who has a W370 reported that they wanted a spare battery and the battery that Sony specified as a replacement is wrong.
Sony has acknowledged the error.
That error is likely to ripple down through all the places selling replacement batteries.

I would wait until I saw some reviews of the W370 before putting my money down.

I had blurrrrrry luck with it!

Perhaps, you'll see my review on BestBuy if they print it.
I got the w370 and had bad luck for some reason.
Despite all the great features, I got blurry results.
This is my 4th digital camera over the years. I know how to adjust settings etc. However, if I had it in auto mode or used manual settings.......I couldn't get the thing to take a Crisp shot.
I even had prints made just to be sure it wasn't my monitor etc.
I do love the features it has.....<From the sound of it...I should be able to take a nice shot while driving down a bumpy road> with the Steady-Shot and Image Stablization.
Although, like in my Bestbuy review........maybe I got the last camera made prior to a Holiday!
Used a SDHC 8GB (15MB/s.100x)Sandisc card which was recommended by the salesman if that makes a difference.
The bumber is, that I need a new camera ASAP, and liked the HD Video capturing ability! <But when you focus in on an object, you can hear the noise of the lens going in and out on the video. <Sony admits to this in their Handbook.
Figured the 14 mega pixel would be great, along with the abilty to take HD video and leave my camcorder home this vacation!
Maybe I don't need 14 mega pixel. Figured it would look better when showing slide shows on my big TV.
Any Suggestions on a replacement when I bring this back to BestBuy?
Appreciate your time!

you don't need much for TV viewing

Even the highest resolution TV, 1080p, is only a 2.1 MP equivalent. You'll never see the extra 12MP of data that is recorded.

Thanks for the heads-up

Thanks for the Heads-up "K." on the "waisted mega-pixel" issue.
And sorry for Hijacking the original thread.
Sad thing (& don't laugh)is that my old Kodak EasyShare Z760 that's a 6.1 mega pixel is a trooper. <Cameras have come and gone through my hands, but it has stuck with me.
Perhaps I should wait for the new Kodak M580 series to come out.
Has features I wanted, but it might not get here in time for my big NEED!
Don't Want a camera that can launch a Rocket. Just a "Point & Click" with some nice SCN modes.>as well being able to take HD video.
So still looking.

Blurry shots
Mar 25, 2010 6:22AM PDT

I did a test drive with this cameraa couple days ago at Best Buy. I agree about the features being great. One observation: my husband has a different camera, but it has image stabilization too. The photos taken with stabilizing turned on are often less than crisp. The stabilizing seems to add noise to the photos. I was planning to get this camera, but will now take a run back there and find out if the stabilization can be turned off. Then, if so, I will shoot a bunch both ways on the auto setting to see if there is a difference. I have a hunch there will be.
