The HX5 has a lot going for it.
The shutter lag is very good for a 10X lens (0.3 second).

You say you are in photography class, but the HX5 offers very little in manual controls.
You may feel left out when the class gets into setting exposure (shutter speeds and apertures).
The HX5 only has 2 aperture settings.

I think a better choice would be the Canon S90 or its replacement, the S95. Either will take higher quality photos than the Sony, and will also perform better indoors or in low light. The S90 and S95 also have aperture priority, shutter priority, and full manual controls, just like a DSLR. Of course they can be used in fully automatic mode too. The S95 adds high definition video capture. They're not too much more in cost than the Sony.
