Just connect with firewire but be aware...

No "drivers" exist. You must use software such as Sony Vegas that is compatible with your camcorder.

It doesn't use Firewire.

To kenben: Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software? Have you tried the included software that came with the camcorder?

Sorry.

Then you move the files over and use software that uses said files. Sorry but I'm still checking model numbers.

Again, there is no driver that will let you use the files...

Whizkid's got a good suggestion in re-installing the software that came in the box with the camcorder... did you do that?

According to this:
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=HDRSR5
"Starter and 64-bit versions of the Windows Vista and Windows XP operating systems are not supported."

Since we don't know anything more about your operating system environment or laptop hardware, it is also entirely possible this will not work at all.

Beyond that, how much available space do you have on the laptop - or do you have an empty (minimum 250 gig) external drive to save your high definition video?

In section "3.0 Known Issues:"

First bullet: Vegas Movie Studio 8 requires QuickTime 7.1.6 or later. As a general rule, you are encouraged to use the most current version of QuickTime."
What version QuickTime do you have installed? (Free download from Apple - yes, even for Windows)
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

Fifth bullet: The Sony Handycam USB driver that is included with DVD-based camcorders can prevent Vegas Movie Studio from recognizing a USB-connected camera. If you use the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel to uninstall the "Sony DVD Handycam USB driver" component, Vegas Movie Studio will be able connect to the camera and import video using Import > DVD Camcorder Disc.
Did you previously have a DVD based camcorder - and installed that driver, but did not remove it?

Hello, I lost the disc that goes with the camcorder and just downloaded the software from sony esupport website. After the installation of the picture motion browser, I imported the media files into my laptop (windows XP), however, all the media files in my laptop appear empty and cannot playback. What do you think is the problem ? Any suggestions please. Thanks

Go get VLC PLAYER and see if that plays it.

If not, it looks grim.
