Sony Camcorder Class Action (Sony owners PLEASE READ!!)

Apr 20, 2005 12:13PM PDT

I have good news for you all! You don't have to just sit back and let Sony stick you with a $200 and some dollar bill. After posting on many message boards about the problem I was having with the "blank screen" (my lcd and viewfinder stopped working for no apparent reason,) I got this message:

Sony Camcorder Class Action Litigation

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi, my name is Steven Berk. I am an attorney in Washington, DC, who specializes in representing consumers who have purchased defective products from technology companies. I am currently working on cases of that kind against HP and JVC. I noticed your posting concerning DCR-TRV38. I have been investigating other complaints about the a number of Sony camcorder models. In connection with that investigation, it would be very useful if I could interview you about your experience with the blank LCD screen problem. If you are interested, please email me at stevenb@cuneolaw.com or call me at 202-789-3960. Thanks for your consideration.

I have contacted him with my story and hope all of you will too! It's not right that Sony makes money off of their defects and its unfair to all of us. They are are looking into a number of problems with Sony camcorders , so if you've had anything go wrong let them know. Even if you have already paid to have it fixed you may be able to get your money back.

Class Action in CA

The suit has been filed in WI but anyone can join. WI has pretty good cunsumer protection laws, thus the reason it has been filed there. For more info you may call the attorney.

Trying to solicit clients by keeping this post near the top
Oct 6, 2005 1:45PM PDT

of the list? Is it legal to solicit clients? Some seem to think the forums are good places for their personal advertising. It seems a bit tacky to me to try to drum up business this way. How big a percentage to you expect to get out of a settlement?

Attorney's fees.
Oct 19, 2005 1:38AM PDT

Hi, my name is Steven Berk. I am an attorney in Washington, DC, who specializes in representing consumers who have purchased defective products from technology companies. By the way, we only receive whatever the judge awards us in attorney's fees. We take these cases on at our own expense, and do not pass any of the costs onto the consumer. I hope that helps. If you have any other questions, please email me at stevenb@cuneolaw.com or call me at 202-789-3960. Thanks for your consideration.

and improvement of the products. The lawyers appear to get upwards of 30% of whatever is obtained from the companies. The consumers, typically, get very little. It looks to me like something akin to legal extortion, and trolling the camera forums for new clients strikes me as questionable activity.

I can see why you might want to take the discussion offline so that potential clients do not realize how little they will get.

I remember all the checks for $2-$5 that I've gotten from these class actions while the lawyers walked away with millions. What, realistically, can people who join your lawsuits expect to receive even if you win your lawsuits?

We actually have received a settlement from Sony for all the Sony Camcorder/Digital Camera owners with the CCD imager problem. You should get more information before throwing stones.

My dead TRV19
Sep 15, 2005 7:49AM PDT

I joined the Class Action Law Suit today after reading all of these postings last night. Ironically I was just researching what my replacement camcorder was going to be and stumbled across these threads. I'm so glad I did because not only do I feel better that I'm not alone but that I can be a part of something that may help the rest of us out.

I'm bummed that after all these years of advocating Sony over all others I'm now having find a better alternative. I've heard the Canon's are comparable, any other suggestions in the $350-500 range?

They're NOT repairing DCR-HC40's
Oct 6, 2005 7:58AM PDT

I posted this in another thread, but apparently the DCR-HC40 is not covered under this new program of theirs. So, if your CCD died within warranty, as mine did, you'll need to pay the $216 flat-rate repair cost for them to swap the CCD.

Simply amazing.

DCR-TRV33
Oct 6, 2005 12:58PM PDT

I bought this camera in August 2003, paid almost 900.00 for it and accessories. I've filled maybe 5 tapes with it. Got it out recently to use and the image was all distorted in Camera mode.

Before finding this thread I had called Sony Support and they wanted me to pay more than a new camera costs to fix it with their flat rate. I spoke to a supervisor, neither of them offered the information about the free fix of the sensor.

I called back and they said they would make a work order number and if it wasn't the problem that I'd still have to pay. I told them bs, you'll send it back to me and we'll talk paying shipping for your pos camera.

If they give you the same reply, don't agree to the repair fee, tell them to send it back to you, it can be fixed cheaper somewhere else.

Ill never buy another Sony product as long as I live. I'm the kinda guy that is stubborn enough to do that.

Thanks for you post, hope mine helps someone else.

I sent my camera to Sony's repair company and it was sent back fixed, as good as new. No charge. It was indeed a faulty CCD. Better get yours fixed while you can.

Attention! Including Digital Cameras in Amended Complaint
Oct 19, 2005 1:32AM PDT

Hi, my name is Steven Berk. I am an attorney in Washington, DC, who specializes in representing consumers who have purchased defective products from technology companies. I am currently working on cases of that kind against Sony and JVC Camcorders. Although a class complaint has been filed in Wisconsin against Sony Camcorders, we are amending our complaint to include Sony Digital Cameras. In connection with that investigation, it would be very useful if I could interview anyone about their experience with the CCD problem/LCD Failure. If you are interested, please email me at stevenb@cuneolaw.com or call me at 202-789-3960. Thanks for your consideration.

Yes, let's jump on Sony and see if we can cripple them or

drive them out of business even though they are taking steps to correct the situation. It seems to me that this is an attempt to attack technology itself (sue them all), and, I for one, rather like the products that the companies are producing. I don't think liability lawyers need more fees.

Sony camcorder
Apr 19, 2006 11:27AM PDT

Hi:

I have Sony CCD-TRV58 what was bought in 2001. Same blank LCD and viewfinder problem was first encountered by me in August 2004. Then I got it fixed and then that problem resurfaced in February 2006 and that made my camera to be unused. A camera that I was thinking that will last for a pretty long time has become useless within 4 years. I hope your efforts will help all of such suffering owners. Thanks.

HC30E
Jun 2, 2007 3:38PM PDT

I have only recently experienced a problem with my camcorder HC30E. After searching the net I found that the problem was the CCD sensor and that sony were fixing the problem for free. Well I took my camcorder to my local Sony repair place and waited to hear from them. After hearing nothing for 5 weeks I rang to find out what was happening only to be told that they couldn't fix the ccd sensor until I paid $800 to fix some other problem. Considering I can buy a brand new camcorder for around $500,why do they imagine I'd pay $800 to fix this one!!!! It seems as if they try to find some other fault with the camcorder so that they don't have to repair it. I never had any problems before this and am not happy as I do not have $800 to fix this one or $500 to buy a new one. :o( If any one has any suggestions I'd really appreciate your feedback.

Oh my! Thanks so much for that link. While I did love my Sony camcorder, I was so mad that this problem was happening to a gently used unit. I wasn't going to send them $200+ for repair that I knew couldn't have happened from me. I so appreciate all the posts from here. I just sent for my label and hope this is the end of it.

Jun 11, 2007 6:07PM PDT

Sorry -- I found this under the FAQ tab for my model number on eservice.sony.com. You might need to follow those steps so it knows your correct model number. Also, this offer expires in October 2007, so -- the sooner, the better!

You can click on the link in my previous post, then look at the top, right corner of the page. There is a "Change your model" field that should fix you up!

Thanks for that info but that is what I've done already and it is now the local repairer who is telling me that there is some other problem with the camcorder which will cost $800 to fix :o( even though before this problem with the CCD I had had no trouble with the camcorder.

Aug 6, 2007 10:32PM PDT

I hope you read the above posts as I did and I filled out a small form online and they emailed me a postage sticker to send back the camera. It came back in 9 days and it is now like new again. I also didn't want to pay $$$ to repair a camera that was hardly used and never dropped. Be persistent and it will pay off.

DCR-HC30 mini dv,Sony
Aug 6, 2007 7:06PM PDT

An American friend sent me,as a gift a barely used DCR-HC30(I'm Australian)and the CCD,chip problem, occured yesterday as soon as I purchased a brand new set of tapes for a project.I rang Sony who told me to bring it in and IF it turns out to be the chip problem, which I'm convinced it is after researching,I have to pay $88!!!
Any info would be enourmously appreciated.I think it stinks that I have to pay for something Sony's admitted is a problem. The cam worked beautifully up until yesterday and I'm heart broken and unable to afford a new camera, actually the $88 leaves me cold.

BUT, THE DCR-HC42 IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE FREE REPAIR LIST!
Feb 13, 2008 4:27AM PST

My DCR-HC42 (purchased two years ago) has the same problem. SONY said although this is the same issue with HC30, but they cannot offer the free repair service in this time since court order only applies to the models produced in 2004 and before. HC42 was produced in 2005. The customer service admitted that they had received many calls about the HC42, but they can do nothing except for documenting all the complaints. The repair service charge will be a flat-fee of $211. Does anybody have a better solution?
