an External ATSC Tuner with HDMI Out to connect between antenna and HDMI of Sony. Forget the PAL converter, you can't use the TV's tuner. Warning, this is not for faint hearted - buy from a local store with return privileges since YMMV depending on OTA receptivity. Also search for suitable antennas. Good luck.
When we were stationed overseas in the United Kingdom, we bought a Sony Bravia multi-system KDL-40ex700 TV from the BX (AFFES). It has an American plug, but apparently was programmed/formatted with British specs, or so we've been told. There is a PAL connection on the back for cable/antenna. Since we've been back in the states, we've had cable set up through an HDMI cord. We recently cut cable and would like to receive local channels via the antenna.
We did buy an adapter/coupler male PAL to F female. The antenna is hooked into the TV just fine, but no matter how many times we run a channel scan, nothing comes up. It keeps prompting us to "please connect the antenna". We have tried 3 different brands of antenna's, called Sony support, did online chat with Sony support, reset the TV to factory settings, and still nothing. Our settings menu does not have an option to switch the TV from cable to antenna, not even when selecting a different region when performing the factory reset.
It has been suggested we may need a PAL to NTSC mutual converter box to make the antenna work. Why would the TV pick up NTSC transmissions with the HDMI cord for cable, but not with the antenna?
So, how can we make the antenna work with our TV? What do we need to do or buy? Any advice and/or suggestions are greatly appreciated. We're losing our minds over here trying to figure this out.
