My solution may not be acceptable to all. I connected the player with old fashioned component cables. It took 5 cables like you see at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Component_video and an audio set too but it cured the random drops.
Hope this helps,
Yesterday I installed the Sony BDP-S470. I played Surrogates BD and everythong was going well. About 20 minutes in the sound cut out. I tried pressing every button but to no avail. I turned off the TV which then turned off the BD player, when I turned everything back on it was working fine. Got past the place where the sound cut out and it happened again further in the movie. I turned off the TV (which turned off the BD player) and then turned it back on, went back to where the sound cut out and everything was fine the remainder of the movie.
The BD player is directly connected to the TV with a HDMI cable. My TV is a Samsung LN-T2353H. I've not had any issues with sound, prior to this experience. Do you think it is the cable or the player or the disc?
