Question

Sony a33 overheating

Jan 27, 2012 8:25PM PST

While filming some videos using this camera, it has a tendency to overheat and shut down. Have others had this experience? What's the solution?

and a wild one at that, is it the battery that's overheating? If so, I would suggest changing that for a recognised manufacturer recommended replacement as soon as possible.

Not to be alarmist, but we have seen, as recently as last week, and certainly over the last few years, where laptop batteries have caught fire or have other potential hazards, last weeks example, HP Notebook PC Battery Pack Replacement Program.

In the past that was where users replaced batteries with cheaper, non-recommended batteries.

Yours is not a laptop of course, but it makes me wonder.

Also, make sure any air vents are not blocked.

A Known Issue

The sensor gets very hot when used for extended periods of time. When it overheats, the camera shuts down. The problem is exasperated by high ambient temperature and the use of image stabilization. The main solution is to keep your videos short. Sony recommends a maximum recording time of 7 minutes at 30

Sony A33 and A55 overheating

It is a very common complaint.
Some say they will not overheat if your turn off image stabilization (Steady Shot).
If you are using a tripod, you should be recording without image stabilization anyway.
Sony is aware of the problem and so far has not come up with a solution.
They suggest you limit your recording time.

Here is one article about the problem:

I suggest you contact Sony and complain so that you will be "on record".
It is likely that some lawyer will turn this into a class action law suit.
Make sure that your name is in the complaint bucket.
