SONY 5.1 Speakers w/HDTV 42"TV??

Aug 6, 2005 6:23AM PDT

I want to use these 5 Sony 5.1 speakers with our Hitachi 43" HDTV TV. Do I need a A/V Amp?? The speakers are 70 watts each. Does 70w mean that speakers can't transmit up to 100w?? I mean that the wattage of the Amp should not go over 70X5= 350 w/ subwoofer 70 ==420. Would 70w speaker be able to go as high as 100w?? I don't want to put more on the speakers than should be allowed. I have a small TV room.(12X12) Also would other A/V Amps work w/ these speakers?? Appreciate all posts on this matter. ODIE

Stick with a 70Watts per channel A/V Receiver, any brand will do but some are obviously better than others. Most receivers do not have a speaker level output for a subwoofer meaning you would need a powered subwoofer, one that has its own amp. Those that do have a sub output will have speaker connections just like the other 5 speakers, ask a salesman at a store to show you the difference.

A speaker rated at 70Watts means it can take up to that level without distorting or damaging the speaker. You might find that driving the speakers with a 100Watts per channel A/V receiver is OK but I wouldn't push it, certainly not if you intend to crank it up.

Yes the 350W will be fine. Check your existing sub to see if it is a passive sub or active, To tell the difference - active will have a 110V power cable, a passive sub won't have a power cable.
