(click link above)

As it states in this link, the PCI Express addition to notebooks (on desktops since last summer) is an important improvement (new Alviso chipset)

1) the wi-fi card now has b/g and a allowing more connections and also reduced interference

2) faster RAM speed

3) Bus speed goes from 400mhz to 533mhz and also uses less power than before

4) integrated graphics is improved and dedicated chipset version supports dedicated video like the new ATI X600 option for gamers

As mentioned the Dell Inspirion 6000 is out already with the new technology for those of you who need to buy immediately. We have to wait and see what happens with HP/Compaq, Toshiba, and Gateway, etc.

The HPZT3000/Compaq X1000 I have (with dedicated video memory Pentium M 15.4" widescreen) was removed from the hpshopping.com site the day before this new release so a new model replacement is likely coming fast.

What should I do with this 1 month old X1000
Jan 19, 2005 11:54AM PST

I got my X1000 last month and bot it from Costco ($1334 for 1.6 GHz, 60 gig 5400, britesview, 256 RAM). It's a pretty neat laptop, although given my usage, I think I wouldn't have mind the 14.1" widescrean laptop such as DV1000.

Question: Does it make sense to return it and wait for these new models to mature?

Thanks.

If buying today get Sonoma, but your X1000 well equipped

I have an even older Compaq X1360US with the Banias Pentium M processor 1.4 (1mb L2 system cache) and I am not going to dump my notebook.

But for people buying as of now they are crazy not to get the updated Sonoma standard with the faster RAM, new chipset, faster system bus, etc.

The HPDV1000 has only shared (integrated memory) wheras your Compaq X1000 has dedicated RAM (I hope you got 64mb dedicated but even 32mb dedicated is better than shared video memory).

Also, the 15.4" widescreen viewing angle is much better than the 14" widescreen on the HPDV1000 -- see complaints and reviews about this here on the forums.

The key advantage of the DV1000 is that is is lighter and smaller - 5.3 pounds to 6.5 for the X1000/HPZT3000 -- and it has the instant on DVD/CD features with the remote control.

But for everyday use a 15.4" widescreen is superior for spreadsheets and DVD's and nearly everything else compared to a 14" widescreen.

So, if you are not over 30 days and got it from hpshopping you could return it and wait for a new Sonoma product.

But HP/Compaq doesn't have one listed yet ............
If you do keep your notebook, I hope you upgrade the RAM from 256mb to 768mb (get Kingston notebook PC2700 RAM on sale for under $100) -- it will go easily into the 2nd slot under your notebook.

Also, since your ordered through Costco, you do have a 6 month return policy (hpshopping is 30 days) so you could return it.

But again, if you are not happy with the Dell 6000 pricing (see their website) the other new Sonoma products aren't out yet from HP/Compaq, Gateway, Toshiba, etc.

You have the faster hard drive 5400rpm (50% faster seek time versus 4200), you have dedicated video, and you have the 15.4" widescreen so unless the size and weight of the notebook bother you I would keep it for the price you paid.

But again, move to 768mb RAM ........(512mb in 2nd slot --you don't have to match RAM slots anymore)
