something wrong

Apr 17, 2005 10:13PM PDT

I have Windows 98SE and whenever I use my internet, it doesn't work. The DSL box and the Router both say that the internet is working, so when i type in "winipcfg" in run, i get my Ip configuration thingy, and there is a blank for "default gateway" and "lease expired" please help. I have to use the libreary to access the net.

Try release and renewing...

the IP address in the "thingy" box. Make sure you are doing this for your Network Adapter and not the "PPP thingy".

I already tried the renewing and releasing thing that you are refering to, but that doesn't work, and a message comes up and says "renew adapter". This is really bugging me.

Not sure if this is the same...

but i had that happen with a cable router. It turns out that the router was having some sort of hardware problem, a bad power supply something or other. Plugged in another router and it worked fine. You might try that (if you have that kind of thing laying around) or call your DSL company if they provided the router.

One has to ask....

What type of Internet Broadband connection?
Have you entered the routers setup page to see if DHCP is enabled?
Has this setup ever worked?

Something Is Seriously Wrong

If you have 98Se, you know what screen i'm talking about. You type "winipcfg" in run, and then some IP config utility comes up, so I go to my Sis Nic Card (LAN CARD or whatever you call it) and it has nothing in the box for "default gateway" How do I put a defaulot gateway in this box that you can't type in, better yet, is there something that I can try other than that. I pressed the "reset" butoon on the router, but still...nothing. Please help, this is really getting me on my nerves!

If you wish to statically assigned....

an IP to the PC, it is done on the Network Properties page of TCP/IP for your NIC. Your default gateway as well as your DNS servers are needed. This still does not answer the question " is the router set to be a DHCP server?".

More info about my problem
Apr 20, 2005 10:09PM PDT

I'm running it direct(DSL modem to PC) and I'm using new cables, and i still get the same problem. My DSL Modem box has 5 lights, one for "power" one for "ADSL" one for "PC" one for "Rx" and one for "Tx" The "power" and "ADSL" are lighted on(solid light, not blinking) but the "PC" light doesn't light,or lights for 10 mintues, then turns off. I checked my settings on my PC,and the settings are right, what can i do to diagonise (i don't know how to spell it) the problem?
