Something hijacked my Firewall !!!

Hello,

I have XP home and cannot turn my firewall on or off. The check boxes are grayed out and it says " For your protection some settings are controlled by Group Policy"

I believe Norton Internet Security did this. I used their removal tool to rid myself of this beast to no avail.

I understand "Group Policy" is a feature of XP Pro but I have the home version.

This has affected my home network as I cannot share folders and get the "access denied see your administrator" warning box.

Please advise as this is driving me absolutely nuts.

Thanks,

RH

RE: to rid myself of this beast

If I understand correctly, you are trying to remove or uninstall the Windows Firewall. Windows Firewall is an embedded feature of XP and as far as I know cannot not be removed/uninstalled. I am not familiar with Norton's firewall but it may just be that during installation it disabled the Windows Firewall as it is a bad idea to run more than one firewall at a time.

Hope this is helpful.

With Norton I think you should use...

Norton's control panels and not the native XP control panel.

Norton can get funky.I also am having issues removing norton.

I found these links that might help.

Though I did not find the registry entry mentioned in this one,For your security, some settings are controlled by group policy and "When you configure Windows Firewall in an organization network using Group Policy, depending on the Group Policy settings, some of the local Windows Firewall configuration options might be grayed out and unavailable, even for local administrators."

Another programs settings could interfere such as anti spyware,e.g.maybe you have spybot and the settings are set to block.
