Someone help please

Mar 18, 2004 10:03AM PST

Im running on a Vaio, with Pentium 4, 1.8 ghz, 512 DDR ram. I recently upgraded my graphics card to an ATI Radeon 9200 and when i turn it back on i noticed two problems.

1. The screen is shaking much like it would after a Degauss, though its not that violent, just constant slight twitch.

2. The fan is incredibly noisy and spinning at unusal speed.

I was just hoping someone might offer some advice to remedy these probems, much thanks!!

1) Check for loose or bent pins on the video connector terminal
2) Latest ATI catalyst drivers?
3) Find that failing fan, overheating a component will give all sorts or weird effects.

If you did the upgrade yourself, try putting in the old graphics card to rule that out. Which fan? If you have a fan linked to heat or PS load, additional speed might be the need to keep it cool. If you paid to have the upgrade, make it their problem to fix it. Also, did you check to see what refresh rate the card was set to. It could just be flickering. It should be set to 72hz or higher. 85 is nice. Sometimes too high causes colors to wash out a bit or things to distort. Good luck.

I've found that problem once too. Turned out that it was a USB problem. I currently use High Speed Internet through a cable company and I got a cable modem from them. The cable modem I got could be run through my USB port. I used this to begin with, but noticed that my monitor's display began to "shake" much like it does when it degausses, but much less (like you said) and this was @ 85hz refresh rate! Anyways, I noticed that whenever the cable modem wasn't plugged into the USB, it stopped. So I solved the problem by ordering a PCI 10/100 Network Interface Card for my computer to connect to the cable modem. Once I turned the comptuer on, I not only noticed that the monitor didn't "shake" anymore, but that my internet speed had also increased by a bit!! So to say it short - it may be a high powered USB device causing the problem, prarticularly one that's powered on it's own already.

Hope this helps somewhat!!
