Someone dial 911! My Wii is dying!

Jan 5, 2010 11:31AM PST

Symptoms.
When trying to restart the Wii, the Wii fails to turn on even after many tries (about 20), but then it suddenly turns on without any problems.

While not functioning, the Wiimote communicates with the Wii because player 1 blue light is lit, but the screen remains black and the Wiimote fails to vibrate when moved across the screen.

It is set to the correct channel because the TV lightens a bit when the Wii is turned on, but darkens when the channel is turned. Plus the Wiimote fails to vibrate which still works when on the incorrect channel.

The problem started when I plugged in a new cable box using an F connector coaxial cable which seems to have created problems. However, the cable box was removed weeks ago.

I have tried unplugging every cable to the Wii and to the TV and even swiched from TV and Audio 1 to TV and Audio 2 with the same problem. The DVD player works perfectly on both inputs and outputs.

I have turned off the Wii by holding the off button until it turns red and unplugging it form the surge protector.

I have the most current Wii upgrade, but I highly doubt this created the problem because I upgraded months ago without any problems.

Why once the Wii is turned on the problem disappears, but reappears when I try to turn it on the next time?

Call Nintendo, because this sounds like an excellent warranty case.

I think I solved the problem.

I live in a loft style studio apartment which means it is a studio apartment with very high ceilings and balcony which acts as a second story. All of the heating elements are close to the ceiling which makes it difficult to heat the entire apartment. The upstairs is becomes very hot and the downstairs remains room temperature. I do not know the exact temperature, but it probably reaches 90+ degrees during when the temperature outside is below 30 degrees. If I leave the Wii in standby when the upstairs reachies 90+, the Wii overheats. Turning it on and leaving it on for a short period of time cools it down. I now leave the Wii completely off (red light) to prevent this from happening again. I am writing this post in case someone else finds the same problem.
