Question

Somehow have 'Mackeeper' and frozen Chrome

May 21, 2015 12:22AM PDT

Good morning,

I have os x 10.7.5 and Chrome 43.0.2357.65 (64-bit).

Once again, I am in need of your help. I recently joined a mastery program that required a lot of downloading from several different sites. During this process I somehow got 'mackeeper' on my laptop. I can't figure out how to get rid of it. At the same time, (during all the downloading) I also got a window that froze my computer. I took a screen shot of the window but can't figure how to load it here.

It states: Mac Browser Warning! Your computer may be infected with adware...then gives a number to call to get it fixed. The only way I can get my browser to work again is to force shut down as the puter is totally frozen on this page.

Also, my puter has slowed tremendously since this happened.

Can you pls help me with both these problems?

Thank you so much,

Rita

MacKeeper

Hi Rita,
Mackeeper is a nasty piece of work and can be difficult to remove completely.

Rather than rehash the dozens of discussions regarding this, take a look at this Apple Discussion and please read the whole thing first.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6634044

You will find other discussions at Apple by Googling "Mackeeper removal" (without the quotes)

As for the Chrome thing. First thing would be to uninstall Chrome and see if the problem happens with Safari or Firefox.

I know it's a little late now, but this is a good reminder to actually read what is on the screen before clicking Next.
Mac keeper does not install by itself, although it may download by itself, and does require a username and password to install.

Get back with us if removing Chrome does not get rid of the second problem.

Oh, almost forgot. Open Safari, go to Preferences, General and remove any checkmark from the bottom box "Open "Safe" files after downloading.
You do NOT want that to happen
