Question

Some websites no longer open

Sep 20, 2011 8:33AM PDT

I returned from 4 months away from home to find my mac desktop (10.5.8 0SX) is no longer able to open some websites such as ebay, you tube and internet banking. Off course there's a lot more. I'm using safari. I had no problem before I left home.

You might like to try the obvious routine

Create a new account with the administrator privileges, log into it and see what happens. Chances are Safari will connect as usual. If this is the case, just repair permissions, reset Safari and maybe use Onyx (all on the main account). If not, you might like to reapply 10.5.8 combo updater or try to trash Safari preferences in your home folder>library>preferences. Hope this helps.

Do you mean the network provider? I don't think that's possible becase I have my ladline and mobile all linked. No, I think you mean something else!

Yes, something else

Go to System preferences in the Dock, then to Accounts. There is a lock down at the left. Click on it, it will ask for your login password, input, hit OK. The lock will open. Press the plus sign above the lock. In the window enter a new account name (anything) and a new password (easy to remember). Click on allow this user to administer the computer (in Lion this option is on top as an option between guest and administrator). After you are done, log out (under Apple sign, top left of the screen. On the login screen, you will now see two options: one is your main account, the other is the new one. Click on the picture of the new one and in the window enter new password. The computer will be now the new account. In the Dock, open Safari and see if the site works. Chances are that it will. Then you can log out again and log in under standard account. This account now needs maintenance, like repairing permissions, checking disk, emptying caches, updating Flash player, etc. You can use Disk Utility (included), TinkerTool System (shareware). If you have an install disk, boot from it (put in the tray, restart with key "c" on the keyboard pressed and then hit "repair disk" from the disk utility. But this may be done later. Now we need to find out if the problem is with the main account only or systemwide.

can you try Firefox and see if this works?

Firefox is a free browser. If it does, you need to trash Safari preferences in users>your name>library>preferences>com.apple.Safari (may be two or three files beginning with this). Drag them to desktop after quitting Safari. If this works, problem solved. If not, go to Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility. Highlight at the left your hard disk or Macintosh HD and first verify disk, then repair permissions if the disk is OK. Close DU and try again. If it still does not work, download free Onyx for 10.5.8 (be careful, it is OS version specific). Run it at Automation>defaults. Restart. If still no go, download combo 10.5.8 updater from Apple (Google the download site) and reapply. Hopefully you would be OK. If not, we'll try to figure out something else.
