Some questions about the new Sony NW-HD5

Jun 23, 2005 4:04AM PDT

Well I am very interested to buy new Sony NW-HD5, mostly because it has way more battery hours and space for music than the 30 gb ipod, but before buying it I have several questions.

1. Will I be able to convert all my music collection (mp3,wav,wma)to the ATRAC3 format without having problems (Because I have heard of a lot of problems involving the sony software)? Because I have like 30 gb in music, and the NW-HD5 would be a waste if I cannot convert and play my music.

2.And if I convert all my music into ATRACT3, will the audio quality lower from its original?

well that's all, thanks

What happened though?

1. Nobody says why they're griping about the infamous sony software problem. What is so bad about their software? Sont make laptops too, thought they knew something about computers AND sound. Won't it turn mp3's into ATRAC? Or is it JUST cds and downloads?

2. How exactly does it sacrifice sound quality? My understanding was that atrac splits the signal into tonal and non-tonal strings and speeds up the encoding and decoding process. How does it sacrifice sound quality? If it does, then why are all cnet editors saying it has the best sound quality on the market? Maybe they should test atrac versus mp3 to see what the sound differences are. Pull some strings Bob, you're the man right?

I'm seriously interested because the sony looks great, I hate stupid flywheels and buttons that have fifty functions.

Atrac is old news, they had it for those minidisc things right? Why are people bashing it? It's older than mp3s I thought. Older than the cd-r.

The debate on the sony's is REALLY vague. Except for the hairline crack thing, I think I'd probably wait for the next generation for them to pick a new alloy. Duh.

And whatdoes (NT) mean? I gotta know, man I haven't felt that stupid since I had to ask about LOL.

just one more question
Jun 24, 2005 2:17AM PDT

Ok so quality doesn't change. I just found out in sony's site that a song in ATRAC3 plus at 64kps is the same quaility as a mp3 at 128 kps. But what about the software? Do you know if I would be able to transfer all my songs from mp3 into ATRAC3 withouth problems??

I just don't really care about the crack if the player is still working well
