People have strange beliefs about....
Dec 30, 2016 12:36PM PST

...a lot of things, not just those in religious world. Some people think the world is going to over heat if they don't stop cow farts. Others believe the earth is hurt if we pump otherwise useless crude oil from the ground and use it to make human life better on the surface. There are vegetarians. Scientists believe an huge explosion or chaos and disorder led to current galactic order. Some believe in UFO's are alien caused, others even believe they are born of alien genetic material, and I might agree with a number of them, LOL. Some believe pornography is healthy, also believe in "free" sex. Yeah, try selling that idea to the fast gal walking the street that it's "free". There are the transcendentalist and the "turn on and tune out" believers. That last sounds like an old TV I had, you turned it on and shortly it "tuned out".

Insanity comes in all shapes.....
Dec 30, 2016 12:59PM PST

There are still nutjobs out there that believe they can handle venomous snakes and not get bit and die.........There is a difference between 'faith' and 'common sense'......some have a lot of one and definitely not enough of the other.

You might like to know that Mark 16:9-20,
Dec 30, 2016 9:01PM PST

the 'snake nut-job' scripture, has been discredited; modern Bibles relegate it to a footnote or omit it.
Now, I know you don't read scripture as a matter of principle, but you can take my word for it ... I'm a religious person ... trust me ... And for my services, I take PayPal ... trust me. Happy

Odd how you can be honest about that and still accept the NWT.

Hebrews 11:1 and Acts 15:3-8. Maybe you can have someone read them to you. Happy

That "some people" use God as an alibi

to justify causing harm is not, itself, a reasonable alibi to deny God's merciful nature or show disrespect for those who who profess a belief in a creator who also guides them.

Not a judgement but a suspicion
Dec 30, 2016 2:24PM PST

You'll need to pardon me for that but, when one gives names of members in their posts, the message isn't a generic one. That doesn't make it disrespectful but it's definitely pointed. As for the subject line alone, I'd say it can't be argued successfully so there's not much to be gained by trying.

To add, the story to which you linked didn't offer the quote, it's context, nor anything about the individual who was claimed to have said it. That leaves too much up to one's own imagination and sometimes those imaginations are too full of prejudice to allow such words to be taken at face value. I was left wondering what point you wanted to make and to whom it was directed. Perhaps I'm just over-analysing. No offence meant.

I don't object to them, dr
Dec 31, 2016 2:11AM PST

I just don't read them. I have my own past experiences to refer to. I'm a firm believer in God and the Trinity but don't feel I need 'reminders' or what I consider to be 'corrections' from others in my faith. I take responsibility for my failures and He gets full credit for all the good in my life. I have faith He will 'take care of me' when I need help the most but leave me to my own devices to take care of myself when He's 'too busy' helping others who are more in need at that moment. I'm a simple woman....my 'high expectations' for myself personally have been met, I believe, by doing the best I could do with what I had available at that time...now my 'high expectations' for my children are still being met and although some aren't exactly what I had hoped for, any past disappointments have been dealt with head on by them and they have mostly been turned around by them either with help, desire, or self-determination. I have every reason to be proud and happy with my life and of those I love and serve God in my own way and not have that 'controlled' by others who have decided theirs is the 'only way'.

"I don't object to them
Dec 31, 2016 2:37AM PST

I just don't read them." That's just what I had in mind. Back in the day, you would have been recruited by Jim Jones or Vernon Howell. Sad
We meet many like you. They don't know, and we can't tell them, that their position is precarious- according to the same Jesus they admire.
Anent the OP, suppose someone slandered your care of your children, and wouldn't listen to your verbal defense? What if you offered them written proof- school or court records, say- but they refused to read them? How would you feel about that?

- Collapse -
This is exactly what I'm talking about, dr
Dec 31, 2016 3:21AM PST

The 'lectures' begin immediately because I don't agree with what you say or don't follow like a sheep to a slaughter willingly. Read history.....weren't the Jews in Germany's occupation told "get on the trains, we are taking you somewhere safe until the war is over" and they BELIEVED it?

I'm sorry that you can't see that I have my own mind, and although you 'meet many like me', it's obvious that you believe YOURS in the ONLY way and that we are 'misinformed' so you need to 'correct' us.

No thank you....I'm happy in what you see as 'ignorance' but what I see as 'independent belief and faith'. God knows....He's the only One that counts.

As for the documented proof you offered as an example.....I've SEEN those 'documented' records by teachers and school supervisors covering their arses and I've SEEN those 'documented' records from doctors and they've been proven to be WRONG through my OWN experiences. Just because some 'professional' SAYS something or DIAGNOSES you and TREATS you for something THEY have pre-determined to be FACT, doesn't make it so. It just means you have been their 'experiment' for a time and I'm not interested in making someone ELSE look or feel good when it's detrimental to my mental and physical well being. I question EVERYTHING and discard what I myself eventually can PROVE to be bull......and I've done that many times in my life and continue to do so.

Being talked down to doesn't help your cause........

And speaking of Jim Jones
Dec 31, 2016 3:30AM PST

and the like, do I strike you has a "koolaid drinker"? Don't EVER make assumptions about me, dr.......Your post attempting to hit me on a personal level like that is terribly offensive and if these are the tactics you use to 'convert' others to your way of thinking, you will understand why I left my job when the owner of the company, a JW, tried the same crap. As far as I'm personally concerned, JW's are the ones not only drinking the 'koolaid', but are handing it out in a pretty forceful and intimidating way....and holding it over their members' heads with only the leaders coming out on top financially like a Ponzi-scheme. They are threatened with their jobs in many cases....I've seen that first hand. You believe the way you want...I have no right to object to it.... MY beliefs are just as valid as yours but your intolerance for that validity is on a level all its own.

I'm sorry you're upset, but I don't buy into
Dec 31, 2016 6:29AM PST

your claim of personal intolerance. In fact, The Jesus you revere DID talk about folks like you, and in an intolerant way. HE did this; we just refer people to those statements when appropriate. The great majority ignore them. Doesn't it comfort you to know that you are part of the great majority?
Your comments about 'written records' are irrelevant, in this way: Do I know about falsified records and corruption? Of course. Did I intend to use such in an example? Of course not, and neither would you. I assume you would give me the benefit of that, as I would for you. So, please revisit my example, put yourself in it, and tell me how you feel. Or, put Jehovah in it. The slanders are the things people say ('He burns people in Hell; He causes people to go to war in His name; He takes children away from their parents to make them angels in Heaven'). His written record, which sanctifies his name, is the Bible, which the great majority are proud to avoid.
History shows that Jones and Howell got their recruits from those who did not check them against God's word. The results were Kool-Aid and gunfire. People like me and you joined them. History.

We disagree heavily....enough said by me.
Dec 31, 2016 7:21AM PST

Your mind is just as closed as you accuse mine of being, dr.....there is no tolerance from your side at all if someone doesn't choose to agree with you. If that isn't 'religious zealousness' I don't know how else to define it. You keep proving my point. Please don't include me in your koolaid joining statements........you have YOUR cult; I don't have one.

"Koolaid joining statements" ?
Dec 31, 2016 8:44AM PST

Can you please cite one? I recall using Jones as someone to avoid. I recall directing you to the historical record. I recall citing our beliefs that were antithetical to his. I don't recall claiming our use of any such coercions or poisons; they would be felonies almost anywhere. Are you accusing me or us of committing felonies?
These are serious charges, all part of your Koolaid statement. Did you forget to add a smiley? Are you inclined to retract your accusations?
Two more questions: Do you find your Mr Trump a tolerant person? If/when he declares war on another country, are you aware that none of Jehovah's Witnesses will be in the opposing army?

I didn't join anything.....you apparently believe you have.  I don't wish to have you enjoin me in that induction.

Are you suggesting that Trump is the ONLY president who has ever committed us to a war?  Sounds like it to me.  Also, IF we end up in a war, it will be because BO put the USA in situations all across the world for that to happen....even more so as he's walking out the door (that can't slam on his sorry **** fast enough).  Which opposing party do YOU think will come to front of the list first?

The President is also CinC of America's armed forces. History shows that when he commands participation in the country's wars, the mainstream religious folks (the kind you don't want any part of) obey. We do not. So, no JWs in the enemy army to threaten you. (We will be in jail or dead, as in the past.) Is that a good thing for you or a bad thing? I will also appreciate direct answers to the other questions I asked.

Meet the JW dictator
Dec 31, 2016 5:30PM PST
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Franklin_Rutherford#Watch_Tower_Society

In 1925 he gained full control over what doctrines would be taught in Watch Tower Society publications, overruling the refusal by the five-man Editorial Committee to publish his article, "Birth of the Nation",[86] which contained significant doctrinal changes.[87] Rutherford later claimed Satan had "tried to prevent the publication of that article ... but failed in that effort";[8Cool In 1927 the Watch Tower Society ceased printing of Russell's Studies in the Scriptures.[89] The Editorial Committee was dissolved in 1931, after which Rutherford wrote every leading article in The Watch Tower until his death.[90] The 1933 Watch Tower Society Yearbook observed that the demise of the Editorial Committee indicated "that the Lord himself is running his organization"

In 1928 Rutherford began to abolish the system of electing elders by congregational voting, dismissing them as "haughty" and "lazy", and finally asserting in 1932 that electing elders was unscriptural.[94][95] He impressed on elders the need to obey the Society's "regulations", "instructions" and "directions" without complaint.[96] Service directors, who reported back to Brooklyn, were appointed in each congregation and a weekly "service meeting" introduced to meeting programs.[97] In 1933 Rutherford claimed that abolishing elective elders was a fulfillment of the prophecy of 2300 days at Daniel 8:13–14, and that God's sanctuary (the Watch Tower Society) was thereby cleansed.[9Cool

At a 1931 Bible Student assembly in Columbus, Ohio Rutherford proposed a new name for the organization, Jehovah's witnesses, to differentiate them from the proliferation of other groups that followed Russell's teachings.[92] Bible Students who opposed or abandoned Rutherford to form new groups were increasingly described as the "evil servant class" by The Watchtower, which said it was wrong to pray for those who were "unfaithful".[99][100] Four years later the term "Kingdom Hall" was introduced for the local meeting place of congregations.

"Zone servants" (now known as circuit overseers) were appointed to supervise congregations. In a Watchtower article Rutherford declared the need for congregations to "get in line" with the changed structure.

claim that salvation is tied to membership within the Watch Tower Society, as well as shunning and censuring any who reject the interpretations given in the volume or related articles in Zion's Watch Tower magazine.

the corruption of Russell's teachings and the Judaizing influence introduced, the Egyptian mysteries had previously been introduced by Russell, prompting many to compare to the Masons.

In October 1920 the Society published a new edition of Russell's 1881 Tabernacle Shadows of the Better Sacrifices. It included an appendix introducing many alterations or reinterpretations of Russell's original views on the death of Jesus and the role of Christ's followers in heaven as typified in the ceremonies of the Jewish tabernacle.
=============================================================

There's a whole lot there, but it's a mish mash of religious snobbery based on uneducated extrapolations of often unrelated prophecies and scripture, backed by megalo-maniacal leaders who enforce their will in the same way communist do, from the top down. When you drill down into what they are, they do, you can see why some govts may feel threatened by them, but the true threat is to themselves, and I suspect may one day self implode like Jim Jones group and others lead by such leaders.

Where in SE have I tried to change anyone's mind
Jan 1, 2017 3:23AM PST

regarding politics, JP? Have I used intimidation or insults to do that? I don't know if you were around here during the 2000 election when all things political got really nasty, but I was a Mod here during that time, and I don't believe I ever pulled a post because someone didn't agree with my opinion.

I tried to explain to drpruner about why I didn't read posts that contain scriptures, and I believe he got carried away with his insults towards me on a personal level just because I held to those reasons. It stopped being a 'discussion' and turned into what dr thought, I believe, was a battle for my 'soul' because I don't believe the same way he does.

I'm perfectly happy with my faith and how I express it...evidently dr isn't for some reason. His way seems to be the only way for him and that's ok, but I won't be 'bullied' into conversion. And I haven't got a clue about why YOU decided to jump into it at this point other than the fact that you are an admitted antagonist.
