General discussion

some more..saving Q this time

Sep 2, 2006 3:14AM PDT

Hello all,

So when one needs to save anything in windows ...click save as and a window opens up where one can select exactly where one wants to save a a document....i mean you can go into various places in that save window and click save.

but in the mac ...when i tried save as...a window scrolls down (this is different than what one sees in windows....i hope i am clear!!) and when one clicks 'where' only few options come and then recent places come.

Is there a way to go to the exact location like say folder B which is inside another folder A on the desktop?? ...because only choices which show up under 'where' are either desktop or folder A

i hope i didnt confuse you all!!

Saving.

The idea is that the folders are not really necessary. Welcome to OS X, I guess. You save photos in Pictures, documents etc in Documents and then use Spotlight, or that program's Open function to retrieve that file.

That's from a cusory glance at the setup, I'm sure there's a more advanced way to do it but this is the way it is designed to work.

Udayan.

Sub Folders
Sep 2, 2006 6:27AM PDT

Hi Kevin,

You had me going for a bit, I too being a former bloatware user checked it out.

Go to the general folder, as you stated the default setting is save to desktop...then other at this point you roughly have about 7 folders to go to. That being said to selet the "food group" that you want to file into. then that would explode the sub folders you currently have under that group. If the saved doc needs its own sub catagory folder see the lower left hand side of the general screen and you will see new folder and it will create the new folder and there we are. Actually easier than windaz Happy

Kevin,
Did you notice how nicely Safari integrates into the system folders? I don't know about you but on windaz I had 2 sets of files very often with stuff on IE plus others in my doc's and also some in explorer?
Here you can integrate seamlessly. The only thing you have is your actual doc's by catagory or whatever and then your bookmarks and links in Safari....awsome!

It's done exactly the same as Windows
Sep 2, 2006 6:33AM PDT

For example:
I have typed up my letter and now want to save it to some place specific.
Being the rebel that you are, you decide that the Documents (My Documents) folder is not for you.
So, File/Save As and up comes the "what to call it and where to save it" dialog boxes.
At the end of the "what you gonna call it" field there is an triangle. Pointing DOWN, you see little choice, but wait, click the triangle to make it point UP and the whole world opens before you.
Now that you can see the entire dialog box, your choices are endless.
Note that in the LH pane of the dialog box there are all your drives, folders and neat places you have put there, ready for the choosing.
The "Few" options that you see cover the entire machine and are usually Your Home, Users, Hard Drive, desktop and the whole machine.
Just navigate to where you want to go.
It's exactly the same as Windows.

Did that help?

Navigating folders
Sep 7, 2006 10:15PM PDT

Now that you've discovered how to expand the Open/Save dialog window, here are a few extra "power-user" nuggets.

You can change the view of the dialog window just like any other Finder window into Icon, List and Column view (Command-1, 2, or 3).

If you have some common folders you use frequently to save files, drag that folder into the sidebar of any Finder window - it will be there in the Open/Save dialog for a quick jump-to.

In List and Column view, you can use the arrow keys to navigate through the list; use the Tab key to cycle the highlited field to the Finder field - you can type the first few letters of a folder's name to jump to it (this works in ALL Finder windows, BTW) and then use Command-Down Arrow to open that folder. If you want to jump up a folder level, Command-Up Arrow gets you there. In Column view, the arrow keys work without the need to use the Command key - sub-folders will open in the next column as they're selected.

The MacOS is loaded with keyboard shortcuts, many of which you can find in Mac Help (Command-?) in the Finder.

Enjoy!

Save Dialogue box on Mac
Sep 8, 2006 5:13AM PDT

All you need to do is click on the little triangle to the right of the box which contains the filename of the file you are saving, This then expands the dialogue box to give more detail as you require.
There is also a resizing control in the bottom right of the dialogue box. Two icons over the left pane of the dialogue box allow you to choose either list or column views. In column views you can see the entire path and you may widen or narrow the columns (OSX 10.4 onwards I think).

Hope this helps.
