General discussion

Some lighning we just had here in North East!

Jun 1, 2006 11:21AM PDT

Went on and on for 20 minutes and HUGE thunders! Pretty scary.

I know, some of you folks have been thru much worse with the monsoons in the Sounth East, but this was pretty wild. I shut down all electrical appliances and hopefully it's on its way east now...

the lightening was so intense and often it turned night into day. their was enough ambient electricity that the red led on my answering machine would glow, then the flash, then thunder. my answering machine became a lightening detector. at first it was cool; then unnerving waiting for the flash after the red led came on. I shut it off, it became too weird.

We had it too and not that I'd like to test it

but I wonder if FIOS is immune to line surges like that.I guess that's a question for Wayne.

I agree, pull the plug.

all aerial and ug wiring (phone, cable, electric) outside the home SHOULD have some form of lightening protection. a near or direct hit can flash-over and enter home wiring. also at risk: hard wired phones, antenna phones, etc. wells, plumbing, water heaters, etc. taking showers, baths, etc. usually intense nearby lightening does not last long. I've worked in cable, phone, and electric industries. basic rule: 'when in doubt, take it out'

It's impossible for a fios cable to carry a lightning surge.

Another joy of the wireless laptop setup ;-)
Jun 2, 2006 10:47AM PDT

I run off the battery during a storm. I suppose lightning could take out my router, but that's not that big a ticket item.

OTOH

I have no need to be on the computer but choose to do so...

- Collapse -
So? What's your point?
Jun 2, 2006 12:04PM PDT

Some of us DO have a need to be on the computer for work. Nice to be able to do so whether I need to or choose to.

Absolutely right.

I just talked from my own perspective.

So,if one were so inclined.......
Jun 3, 2006 7:59AM PDT

they could surf in the worst T/storm imaginable as long as they had fios and a wireless laptop??

I've got this image stuck in my mind of Igor pecking and poking on his laptop as he plays online poker on the roof of Frankenstein Castle after sending up the Kites.....LMAO.

Chuckle ;-)

Oddly enough, although we had a lot of problems with electric surges in storms out here in CT, and I've (stupidly probably) never unplugged a thing, I only ever had the transformer on our furnace blown out TWICE!

We got hit once hard enough for the main circuit breaker to the house to trip -- while we were away during a heatwave, an episode we still refer to as the "great thaw" (coming home to a hot/muggy home with a thawed freezer full of meat AIN'T fun!).

actually a bit farther north towards Pittsburgh is where it normally goes but we got brushed by a short gully washer about 10 minutes ago (knocked out satellite signal for a bit).

However when I wrote the message a big bang came down here in NYC and I had to unplug everything again. It's cool now though.

Came through Maryland too
Jun 1, 2006 3:42PM PDT

Some impressive light and thunder, but unfortunately didn't cool things off as much as I'd hoped. At least it's below 80 now, about 77 here past midnight.

We just had two loud thunderclaps....
Jun 1, 2006 7:43PM PDT

the first one scared the bejabbers out of the dog. After that just some grumbles and a lot of rain.

Happened in my area, too, with circling winds
Jun 3, 2006 1:29AM PDT

The storms were "pop-ups". and one sat over my area for almost 2 hours without moving. Drenching rains, constant thunder and lightning, and very high winds. Some claps shook the house.

But something I had not seen before --- the wind would sometimes blow in a circle!

Better belive that sent me to the protected area of my house.
